Welfare dependency here in America is an issue that numerous communities across the Nation are faced with and from my point of view it is one of the leading attributes to poverty here in America. My community has continuously lacked consistent income levels to sufficiently live above the poverty line and it has been a never ending cycle. How did so many communities succumb to such harsh living conditions in the most powerful country in the World? This is a question that is asked by many and the other would be how do we break the cycle? There are many attributing factors to this unforgiving reality for countless such as crime, drugs, lower educational outcomes, welfare dependency and the list goes on and on. I would like to zone in and analyze how welfare dependency plays a major role in the never ending cycle of poverty within my community.
Federal government assistance began after the Great Depression in the 1930’s. Prior to the Great Depression, local governments shared the responsibility in aiding mothers with dependent children and the elderly which was then referred to as public relief. By 1926, forty-six states were aiding mothers and the elderly, but local governments had a hard time keeping up with the caseload as it grew rapidly from unemployment and urban poverty. Flash forward to 70’s later, congress has now established multiple federal aid programs that help families with food, cash assistance, health insurance child care and even housing.
Though welfare was put in place to ensure that every American family had a certain quality of standard living, but it has now become a cultural norm here in the United States for individuals to apply for benefits although many are able to sustain without assistance. It was repor...

...till within my community. First, the problem-solving approach would be the Georgia Department of Labor should offer free career training programs. Within these programs, it will educate and inform the recipients of the basic techniques that are required to land a job. If funding is not available then there are other actions that can be taken to like recruiting volunteers or setting up the job training for recipients. Volunteers will be put in place to train and guide individuals on the right path to success while on the job training will be used as a way for recipients to earn experience that is needed for any employment. Holding recipients accountable and forcing able body individuals to actively engage in seeking employment will not only reduce welfare recipients but citizens within low-income communities will be able to revamp their neighborhoods inside and out.
