Emoticons

What is it? – An emoticon is a representation of a facial expression such as a smile or sad face by using various keyboard characters over social sites or email showing what the writer is feeling.

Why are they effective? – Emoticons are effective because it shows how the writer is feeling when they are putting them however they are not professional and they would not be included in sick notes or emails from and to your employer.

Examples: ‘  ‘ this is an example of a happy emoticon it represents that the writer is happy. ‘  ‘ this is an example of a sad emoticon it shows that the writer is sad while writing this.

Note taking

What is it? – Note taking is recording information that is captured by another source the writer records the essence of the information. This skill is used during meeting or when something is being presented.

Why are they effective? – Note taking is effective because it helps to remember what tasks need to be done and helps to remember what someone has said or taught you. Taking notes helps a person get organised because they can work from a list of notes instead of from memory in a random order. Taking notes help to develop new skills.

Examples: an example of someone taking notes would be when a professor in a university is giving a lecture the students will take notes on the most important pieces of information.

Example: Another example would be when a police officer is listening to someone making a statement, they will take notes on the main things that they need to look into.

Report

What is it? - A written report is a written document describing the finding of a certain matter, they provide information on the matter.

It is very important when writing a letter of application to a company because if they see that you cannot use it correctly then they may not take your application any further also if you are in a business and you are advertising then customers may find it unprofessional if they are reading something that doesn’t really make sense.

Proofreading

Proofreading is when you or someone else reads a document for example a letter of application and tries to spot any errors within it. Proofreading is better than spellchecking a document because if someone reads it they will be able to tell whether or not there are any grammatical errors whereas a spell checker will not pick up on that as long as the word is spelt correctly.
