Emoticons
What is it? – An emoticon is a representation of a facial expression such as a smile or sad face by using various keyboard characters over social sites or email showing what the writer is feeling.
Why are they effective? – Emoticons are effective because it shows how the writer is feeling when they are putting them however they are not professional and they would not be included in sick notes or emails from and to your employer.
Examples: ‘ ‘ this is an example of a happy emoticon it represents that the writer is happy. ‘ ‘ this is an example of a sad emoticon it shows that the writer is sad while writing this.
Note taking
What is it? – Note taking is recording information that is captured by another source the writer records the essence of the information. This skill is used during meeting or when something is being presented.
Why are they effective? – Note taking is effective because it helps to remember what tasks need to be done and helps to remember what someone has said or taught you. Taking notes helps a person get organised because they can work from a list of notes instead of from memory in a random order. Taking notes help to develop new skills.
Examples: an example of someone taking notes would be when a professor in a university is giving a lecture the students will take notes on the most important pieces of information.
Example: Another example would be when a police officer is listening to someone making a statement, they will take notes on the main things that they need to look into.

What is it? - A written report is a written document describing the finding of a certain matter, they provide information on the matter.

It is very important when writing a letter of application to a company because if they see that you cannot use it correctly then they may not take your application any further also if you are in a business and you are advertising then customers may find it unprofessional if they are reading something that doesn’t really make sense.
Proofreading
Proofreading is when you or someone else reads a document for example a letter of application and tries to spot any errors within it. Proofreading is better than spellchecking a document because if someone reads it they will be able to tell whether or not there are any grammatical errors whereas a spell checker will not pick up on that as long as the word is spelt correctly.
One of the most common reoccurring symbols found is the image of a smiley face. In some sort it is seen everywhere, in the heroes costumes, in the glass of windows, or as the big yellow circle used as the symbol of The Comedian. When putting on his costume, The Night Owl’s goggles almost certainly always show a smiley in the circles. (ch 7, pg 20) The image is known for a fact to be The Comedian’s super hero emblem. It is always pinned to his costume and was found on the sidewalk when he fell from the window. However, it can also be seen as very ironic. The Comedian, opposite of his name, was not a very nice guy. It was rumored he raped Sally, (ch 2 page 6) and murdered a pregnant woman in Vietnam. (ch 2, p 15) If anything, The Comedian brought more chaos than laughter into people’s lives. This is similarly how Moore uses it as the books cover to pertain to the theme of the book. Instead of symbolizing a happy peaceful time like a smile should, it instead occurs in a world that is plagued by filth and corruption.
With Cornell note-taking, lecture notes are noted down by the student in a more comprehensive manner which may improve retention. Instead of writing whatever is said or seen, the student must note down information that appears to be meaningful. All my years in school, I have struggled with taking notes. It was always a problem for me because I never knew the right and most effective way to take notes. From taking this course, it has shown that there are many ways to take effective notes.
Technical 23- (use as needed) I agree with this completely. I typically find I work better with writing down things. The best way I study for tests or memorizing things is to repeatedly write it down. For, example I had to study a book to take a test. I went through that book and copied it word for word two or three times. This is just how studying works for me.

Doubek states there is two hypotheses on why note taking is beneficial, the first known as, encoding hypothesis tells us when a person is writing notes the mental processing allows us to learn and retain information better. The second known as the external-storage hypothesis tells is that you learn by looking back at yours or others notes. Doubek also states that there are two types of note-taking: generative and nongenerative. Generative note taking occurs when there is summarizing, paraphrasing or concept mapping while nongenerative involves copying notes verbatim. Doubek uses a study published by Pam A. Mueller of Princeton University and Daniel M. Oppenheimer of the University of California, Los Angeles, to prove his claim. However, this has greatly hindered our writing in the professional standpoint. With the ability to write simple phrases with poor grammar and quick, abbreviated words, casual writing established itself as another problem for individuals. In some instances, texting has been constantly used incorrectly where one friend told Truus that he “CANT BELIEVE U PUT APOSTROPHE IN HAIRDRESSERS”(Truss 496). During the text, he emphasized on the apostrophe in hairdressers. Although using an apostrophe is unnecessary, it is certainly important in a professional career. Even throughout the text, he did not write out you, but instead wrote it as an “U”. As a result, this short message can carry over to his writing and may appear in future resume and cover letter from habit. Even with the constant reminders to write correctly, individuals continue to write in short messages as they have grown slothful to write longer text. Even then, these habits carry over to their work and as depicted in Wiens’s company, individuals “can’t distinguish between “to” and “too” (Wiens 500). Due to an overuse of writing short texts, employers cannot distinguish simple phrases that would be otherwise taught in an elementary school class. There are many different techniques a person can use to take notes in class. Some note taking styles are more helpful than others, but it all depends on what kind of notes a person likes writing. Three styles of note taking that are beneficial for people to use are Cornell, outline, and graph.
Two of the most important study skills are setting goals and taking notes. A student may set a time goal, such as studying a few hours a week; set a general goal, such as trying to study hard and stay on schedule; set a specific performance goal, such as getting at least 80% of the homework problems correct. Another important study skill is taking notes. Students generally make two kinds of mistakes in taking notes. One is to try to write down everything the instructor says, which leads to confusing notes. The other is to copy concepts that they do not understand but hope to learn by memorization. Note taking is a process that involves the writing down of information that has been received from another source such as a professor or boss. Note taking provides the user with reference material to use for future use. Note taking is one of the most important and useful study skills to have while in college. Students must expect to take a lot of notes in college. Professors will expect their students to take notes during lectures in order to go back and review at home alone or with other classmates. Note taking is a skill, so in order to make this skill efficient, we must develop multiple techniques in order to make note taking more profitable. Chapter 6 in our textbooks gives us plenty of techniques of note taking to improve our note taking skills. But before that lets point out that note taking has two basic functions that note taking serves. Note taking serves as a way to help you store or encode the material and a way to keep the information in written form until you need it for later reference (Pintrich & VanderStoep, 137).
