Master said: ”live and learn.” Regardless of what, where or when we choose to obtain knowledge, how we approach learning is unique to each and every one of us based on our individual learning style or styles. It is the idea of behavior that suggests learning styles are a way of being, and can change over time. The good learning style can help us learn better and learn faster. Usually, there are seven learning styles: first, Visual. People prefer using pictures, images, and spatial understanding. Second, Aural. People prefer using sound and music. Third, verbal. People prefer using words, both in speech and writing. Forth, Physical. People prefer using their body, hands and sense of touch. Fifth, logical. People prefer suing logic, reasoning Seventh, people prefer to work along and use self-study. Our brain can control multi-zone when we studying. So multimodal is a balance of all the different learning styles. For a long time, I think I’m a person who likes visual and physical learning style. I thought I can learn better and faster when I took a hands-on approach. When I was working for ShuiMu Tsinghus University editorial department I enjoying working work with computers. I like the keyboard’s noise. Because the louder noise it makes the better touch it has. The physical aspects of manipulating the keyboard and the visual depictions on the screen fit right into my preferred learning style. This learning style reflects on my normal studying. I like taking notes, and highlight important parts on book, the color can help me memories. I use rainbow’s color to distinguish important level. Sad thing is I can’t rent any book cause the librarian does not allow me put any color on As an international student, language grade is really important to us. For last 3 years, I took quantic IELTS test. My average grade is 6.5; average writing grade is 7.0; average speaking grade is 7.5. average reading grade is 6.5; average listening grade is 5.5. I tried many ways to improve my listening grade, but none of them is working for me. I would rather learn how things work by using them on my own than by listening to someone tell me how to use them. In IELTS test, people speak faster than normal people. Without tips, it is hard for me to identify the main point of the information presented, and it is nearly impossible for me to remember what people just talked about. And that is the biggest reason why I don’t want to take the TOEFL test. Because in TOEFL listening test, the only thing you can do is follow the talking people as far as possible. Because of my poor listening, PPT and handwritings are important to me. During class, I try to write everything down, even I can download the PPT online. If I do not copy teacher’s handwriting or PPT I will sit on my chair like a fool. Also I try to watching teachers’ facial expression and body language. When they look down, they are trying to remember or trying to order what their speech. The way a human learns is very exciting and can really go in depth when explored. The brain is in control of everything, there are endless abilities it can do and plays an enormous role in how the average human learns. There are various learning styles and theories of intelligences that can explain or even put in perspective in everything we do. Without the exploration of multiple intelligences, the knowledge of how humans learn would be irrelevant.
The visual learners prefer to use pictures, images, maps, colors, and spatial intelligence, which assist them to arrange their information, interact with others and give them a great sense of direction. They are great at accumulating information, curious and inquisitive due to the fact that without adequate information, the portrait of what they are learning will be imperfect. They are also enthusiastic about theory and facts; system diagram helps them to visualize the connection between parts of a system; story method assists them to learn by heart the content that cannot be seen easily. (Garner, 2012)
Learning styles is one of the ways schools have changed over the past couple of years in regards to diversity. The varieties of learning styles of students have become more aware to educators. There are three main learning styles; visual learning, kinesthetic learning, and auditory learning. Visual learners take up about half of student learners using textbooks, charts, course outlines, and graphs are useful instructional aides (Sadker, p. 47). Kinesthetic learning is also known as tactile learning. These students learn by hands on learning. Planning for student to have movement in class will help these learners. Our last learning style is the less of the three called auditory learning. These students learn best by hearing; they can remember the details of conversations and lectures and many have strong language skills (Sadker, p. 47). By providing a time for these students to recite the lesson themselves can support this form of learning. To be an effective teacher for all the learning style diversities means being able to be flexible and incorporate a variety of teaching techniques.
To determine the best way I learn, I carried out two different learning styles questionnaires online. One may find that they are not always categorised in a specific type rather they may have more than one learning preference. Firstly, the most commonly used Neil Fleming’s VARK model. Fleming believes that there are four different types of learner: Visual, Auditory, Reading/writing and Kinesthetic learners. The second model I tried out was Soloman-Felder Learning Styles and Strategies.
The IELTS test is designed to assess students’ competence in English language in an integrated skills; reading, speaking, writing and listening. It is an obligatory exam for registration in many universities as well as it is a certificate to raise their luck in gaining a job. The listening test is particularly aimed at measuring the ability of students understanding of English. In most cases Universities offer preparation course for the students to develop their skills further, in order to prepare them, the exam centres are well equipped with computers, microphones and other recording devices. This paper will accentuate on evaluating an IELTS listening test in relation to its reliability, validity, authenticity, instructiveness, fairness, impact and wash back. The particular test to be evaluated was taken from IELTS official practice material updated in March 2009.
There are three types of learning styles. They are: auditory, visual and kinesthetic. An auditory learner processes information by hearing and discussing the information. Visual learners process information through visuals such as charts, pictures, and other types of printed information. Kinesthetic learners process information by muscle movements and experiences that are hands-on. Through the assessment I have discovered that my strongest learning style is a visual style with a score of 13, followed by kinesthetic, 8, and lastly auditory with a score of 4. Based upon this, my strength is using a visual learning style. The things I do now in studying that are within the guidelines include: read the book chapters and highlight while reading, pay special attention to charts and diagrams shown in the book or in class. By reading and highlighting I have found I can quickly go back through the information and reread the important facts, helping me remember them better. The more times I go over the information, the more effective I am come test day. I have found it very easy to read charts and diagrams in textbooks. Generally, by being able to read certain charts, it is much easier and faster to comprehend the information than if I was to read the paragraphs about it. The VARK model is one of the most common methods that people use to categorise learning styles. It was made by a man named Neil Fleming. The VARK model “expanded on the Neuro-linguistic programming models” (16). It was launched by Neil Fleming in 1987, after he finished his work and studies at Lincoln University. Before Neil Fleming, the VAK model was the most commonly used method to categorise learning styles. The VAK model doesn’t include Read/Write. The Read/Write learning style was created by Neil Fleming after he realised that it was best to split the Visual learning style into Symbolic (Visual), and Read/Write.
My learning style is Physical (Kinesthetic). I prefer using my body, hands and sense of touch. My Learning style guides the way I learn. It also changes the way I internally represent experiences and the way I recall information. Since I am a physical learner I use my cerebellum and also my motor cortex (at the back of the frontal lobe) which handles much of our physical movement. Some strategies or techniques that me and other students can use to leverage in our online and face to face courses is to use physical objects as much as possible. Physically touching object as we learn what they do helps us learn faster and more efficient. Flash cards is another way that can help us memorize information because you can touch them and move them around.

Acquiring and being aware of your learning styles is beneficial to accurately processing information that could be used for intellectual growth. Furthermore, learning styles are a part of how humans function and receive information from their world, so not being properly informed about this concept could bloom confusion, dysfunction, and chaos in society. This can be attributed to everyone’s different multiple intelligences or learning styles. A persons learning style is the method though which they gain information about their environment. As a teacher, it is our responsibility to know these styles, so we can reach each of our students and use all of the necessary methods.
According to the research made by Bohlmann & Pretorius (2003), there is a significant correlation between reading ability and academic success. It means that students who read a lot are more likely to do well in school and pass exams than students who are weak readers. Good readers do not just do better at subjects like reading, English and history, they do better at all subjects and they do better all the way through school. Another study by Bohlmann & Pretorius (2002) showed that the students who failed Mathematics achieved 50% or less in reading comprehension, meaning that they understood only half of the text or even less. But when their reading ability improved, their marks for Mathematics improved as well. So, students who read a lot and who understand what they read usually attain good grades. It means that reading is essential for academic achievement.
