The most obvious of characteristics in an epic can sometimes receive little attention and the story, as a whole, can become unnoticed. A common phrase of this is, “pointing out the elephant in the room.” It is obvious, to me, that Virgil’s Aeneid is based on the epics written by Homer; Odyssey and the Iliad. Many of its major chapters and minor details are very similar in comparison. The Odyssey is a poem of war and peace. That is the return from war and the establishment of a homecoming. Virgil’s Aeneid is the escape of war and the search for peace. In a broad view, the companionship between Virgil and Homer can be seen in several ways. The wandering on land and sea of the hero, driven by angered divinity, the second half replays the scenes of war of Homer’s Iliad. It should be noted that Virgil began his story with, “Wars and the man I sing.” And Homer started his epic with _________. This foreshadows events that have are going to be taking place throughout these epics. This evidence of what or how these epics have started were not written accidentally.
