The process of discovering is a journey in which events have significant implications leading to intellectual and emotional responses being drawn out. The journey can be both physical and spiritual as evident in the poem ‘Stopping by the woods on a Snowy Evening” by Robert Frost to a great extent. This is portrayed through the process under which the man discovers he has a place in society and is not worthless. This is emphasised through the changing tone in the last stanza of the poem and his eventual epiphany before returning to life. The film ‘V for Vendetta’ by James McTeigue, explores a similar notion through the character Evey as she discovers her place in society and how to stand for her freedoms. This is explored greatly in ‘Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy evening’ in which the man returns to the woods in which he is attracted to. He dawns upon the frozen lake as a place of emptiness but purity, forcing him to reflect upon himself as he looks at his reflection. “Between the woods and frozen lake, the darkest evening of the year”. The quote has an exclusive focus on his physical surroundings and provides an ominous experience through its imagery. Additionally, it has a focus on the isolation of which the man values. The man finds reflection upon separation from others. The specification of the frozen lake demonstrates that he is drawn to the lake, it holds significance in his life. He uses the lake as a catalyst of reflection, drawing an emotional response leading to his epiphany in the final stanza. “The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep” The use of the period acts as a separation between the two phrases. His attraction to the woods and the comfort and isolation which it represents is outweighed by the role he plays in the functioning of society, accentuating his newly found value as a result of his emotional response upon reflecting against the frozen lake.
