"Alabanza! It means to raise this thing to God's face." A simple word which my character grew up with. Usnavi is a huge part of the musical, In The Heights. He helps everyone from his Barrio, or neighborhood, he is a very caring character. I believe that his roots is what makes him who he is and it explains a lot of why he gives back to his neighborhood. His parents were immgrants who moved from the Dominican Republic to New York. On the day his parents arrived they saw a ship. On the side of the ship it read, U.S. Navy. Which his parents turned it into Usnavi. They bought a bodega, a small grocery store, and they worked there. They got sick and went back to the Dominican Republic.On the month of December they passed away, leaving Usnavi alone …show more content…

This musical takes place in a neighborhood called Washington Heights in New York. We get to see how the characters live in the span of three days. The audience experience: love, happiness, heart breaks, and the struggles of everyday life for these characters. Most of the characters are not finacially stable. They all came to NewYork to find a job and achieve a brighter future for their families. Struggling everyday to survive, until one day abuela Claudia wins the lottery. All her life working hard and appreciating the smallest crumbs of bread. Now, $96,000 are all hers and she could do whatever she wishes to do. At this point, it's summer and it's as hot as eating a ghost pepper. With everyone using the A/C at the same time the power goes out. The neighborhood goes into chaos. At that time, abuela Claudia decides what she is going to do with the money. 1/3 for Usnavi, 1/3 for her, and the rest for Sonny. Together Usnavi and her could go back home and open their own bar near the beach. Everything was going according to plan, but on the last of this musical we are told that abuela Claudia has passed away. She was the life of the barrio and everyone grives for her. Usnavi decides to complete his abuela's last wishes. He buys a ticket to the Dominican Republic to chase his dreams. His cousin and his friends make a moral near the bodega.
