Hollywood: the land of opportunity. Well only if you're not apart of a minority group that is. Throughout the history of the film industry the powers that be have made it increasingly difficult for a minority to achieve equal recognition and representation in the industry in comparison to their white colleagues. Hollywood has made this an all too common occurrence. Whether it be white washing minority parts in a film, or a pay gap in comparison to their non-minority colleagues, offering less opportunities to minority talent, or simply ignoring the achievements of minority creators as a whole. All of these factors have led to underrepresentation and exploitation of minorities within the film industry. Throughout the history of the film industry exploitation and underrepresentation of minorities has been a prevalent issue. On a whole Hollywood views the demand for minority roles as non-existent. In a study on Statista, they show in 2016 only 13.9% percent of lead roles in films were for minorities (“Ethnicity of Lead Actors in Movies in the U.S. 2016 | Statistic.”). Another staggering number represented by another study shows only 13.3% of scripted cable shows had a black role in them (“Ethnicity of Cable Scripted Show Roles in the U.S. 2016 | Statistic.”). These figures clearly show a gap in the representation of minorities in media as a whole. In May of 2017 Variety conducted a study finding that only “46 lead roles on new broadcast series ordered for the upcoming season, only 20% were cast with non-white or Hispanic actors.” (Holloway).
