Uncle Peck: Play Summary

The play how I learned to drive displays a lot of moments of explicit and taboo scenes. The overall conflict in this play is the fact that Uncle Peck loves his niece beyond a normal nurturing way. Ever since Lil bit was young, she has had numerous encounters with her uncle that were inappropriate. For instance, one of the situations that Lil bit knew her uncle was wrong, was when they were in the car and he kissed her. This is not appropriate for a family member to do on the lips because his overall intentions was to try to have sex with her. She also sat on his lap when learning how to drive, hence the name and he was receiving sexual enjoyment from that. This showed signs of disinterest and was a direct forward that Lil bit was losing interest in her uncle.
Another form of taboo subjects is the father in her household. In modern day society we do not talk about the size of a man’s penis in casual conversations. This play introduces the father as a man who has a very big penis. The household is fully aware of this and makes jokes and statements referring to it throughout the play. Something that I also believe was taboo was when Uncle Peck began to feel/rub on the chest of Lil bit. He slowly lured her in with his words to make it seem like it was not a big deal which in reality it was immoral. Unfortunately, she did not figure this out until it was too late.
Lil bit liked her uncle to some degree only because growing up she was tricked. As she matured, Lil bit realizes that her love for her uncle is really just strong affection towards him in just a family way. When she was younger she thought maybe she loved him in a relationship point of view due to some of Pecks
