The short story “Two Words” by Isabel Allende is a tale about a girl who went by the name of Belisa Crepusculario. She had extreme desire to be the best at selling words, since the first time she saw words in the sports section of the newspaper. This story follows the journey of a young lady named Belisa who travels her country selling words. One day she is confronted by the feared Colonel who requests her to help him write a presidential speech. This is because he no longer wants to be feared by the people of his country but rather admired. Upon the completion of her task Belisa also gives the Colonel two special words of his own. Belisa was born into a family so poor they did not even have any names to give to their children. She survived through floods, droughts, and hunger when her siblings did not, which left her next in line for death. But Belisa made her way across the plains and found water, and along with it a paying occupation. She discovers words and how to use them. She finally has a purpose and a name, the poetry of beauty and twilight woven together. This shows the adversity and love in the story.Despite the odds Belisa and the Colonel, although maybe unknown to them at the time, both find what they are looking for, love. The unlikely pair ends up together after a series of events beginning with the Colonel kidnapping Belisa to write his presidential speech. It is no wonder after this that they are intertwined for good. After all the Colonel is trying to be less of a forceful war hungry man, which would most likely be irresistible for most women that could use a protective companion in their life. When noticing a person who wears a similar clothes everyday, one may wonder what their intentions behind their attire is. In Isabel Allende’s story “Simple Marie” featured in The Stories of Eva Luna, the clothes are taken in a figurative sense just as much as in a literal function. Just as clothes are made to cover up one's physical body, clothes can be interpreted as a covering of one’s soul and true identity. Although, not very evident on the surface of the story, one can discover the intentions of Maria, by correlating the situation to her attire. The symbolism that Allende creates within the clothing of Maria illustrates a deeper sense to her vulnerability and reasoning within the situations of her life.

All through the stages of her growth, the young woman, Janie, has several dreams in her life. Janie is later married off to a rich young man by her grandmother. After a while, the two break up and she runs away with another young man who becomes her second husband. The book then takes a turn in the twist of events when it stops from just being dreams and it becomes reality. Janie now realizes the reality of the situation. The theme of this book is that the human capacity to adapt to and find happiness in the most difficult circumstances. Each character in the novel shows this in their way. For instance, their family is randomly taken from their home and forced to work but they still remain a close nit family. In addition, they even manage to stick together after being separated for one of their own. These show how even in the darkest time they still manage to find a glimmer of hope and they pursued on.
First of all, the protagonist applies for the job to protect the president, but he gets rejected and becomes disappointed. Then, the central motive for his purpose in life is drawn out to be his daughter, not his duty to serve and protect the president. The protagonist does many things to please his daughter, and being close to the president is what the protagonist was trying to do to excite his daughter and please her. Even though he didn’t get the job, he wanted to cheer up his daughter by taking her into the white house on a tour. While the tour goes on, the people in the White House begin to notice odd behavior, so everybody seems to heighten their senses. By surprise, the antagonist was making an entrance to the scene secretly. Later on, it is revealed that the antagonist already had a position in the White House as the Speaker of the House. He eventually holds hostages, and by the turn of events, the protagonist meets with the presdident and does what is right to make his daughter proud of him and to demonstrate to the president his potential of being a possible guardian. While all the action goes on, the film ends in the most heroic way. The protagonist almost single-handedly takes out all of the opponents that stand in his way. The first poem that I chose was by the poet Julia Alvarez titled “Queens, 1963” this told the story of a family that has moved into in Queens, NY. The writer and narrator of this story is from the Dominican Republic. One year has passed for the family to finally settle into the neighborhood. This time an African American family has moved right across the street. The young girl notices how her neighbors have not treated this family with kindness and respect. More police have been seen patrolling through the neighborhood. When reading this poem my initial thoughts were that “Queens, 1963” describes the American people's behavior towards foreigners and their reactions. Alvarez states, “Mr. Scott, the retired plumber, and his plump Midwestern wife, considered moving back home, where white and black got along by staying where they belonged.” (Alvarez, pp 952) It will take another year and another family that will move into their neighborhood, than once the African American family settles in another family will be placed under the same scrutiny.
Miss Brill is a story about an old woman that lacks companionship and self-awareness. She lives by herself and goes through life in a repetitive manner. Each Sunday, Miss Brill ventures down to the park to watch and listen to the band play. She finds herself listening not only to the band, but also to strangers who walk together and converse before her. Her interest in the lives of those around her shows the reader that Miss Brill lacks companionship.

“Editha” is a story about a manipulative woman named Editha Balcom and her suitor, George Gearson. The plot of this story is focused on a war and whether or not George will join the fight. He is conflicted between his pacifist nature and social conditioning and what he knows Editha wishes for him to do. Editha is determined that George will fight in the war, even if she has to manipulate him into doing so. George does join the fighting and is immediately killed. In the end of the story, Editha visits George’s grieving mother and is met with resentment and contempt.
Because Belisa Crepusculario had such a difficult childhood in which she experienced so much loss in her life, she is forced to become a stronger person both mentally and physically to survive such devastating circumstances. It will ultimately be this strong sense of survival that she develops through these experiences of great loss, which will guide her through the survival of life threatening situations.

We think that just people who have been exposed to the war can deeply understand the unfortunates, tolls, and devastates of the war. He also shared and deeply sympathized sorrows of who took part in the war; the soldiers because they were not only put aside the combat, the war also keeps them away from community; people hated them as known they are officers and often shouted " down with officers" as they passing. We have found any blue and mournful tone in this story but we feel something bitter, a bitter sarcasm. As the war passing, the soldiers would not themselves any more, they became another ones; hunting hawks, emotionless. They lost everything that a normal man can have in the life. the war rob all they have.
