“Tunnel” by Sarah Ellis is about a sixteen-year old boy who is looking for a job. He gets a job as a babysitter, and has to look after a girl name Elizabeth, Ib for short. Ib and Ken go for an exploration mission, as he calls it, ending up at a recognizable place from Ken's childhood. Ib enters this place, endangers herself, and requires assistance from Ken. Ken and Ib hear voices that will only disappear upon hearing Ken and Ib’s real name. Ken helps Ib, and they leave, trying to forget about the traumatic experience. This story was able to positively depict the elements of a short story through the point of view, theme, and the mood of the story.
The point of view was effective throughout the course of Tunnel giving us a better understanding of the elements happening. Tunnel is written in first person point of view, meaning that the pronoun “I” was used throughout the story. On page 44 this is seen. It states “I didn't know by the time I was sixteen it would be the global economy and there would be no summer jobs, even though you did your life-skills analysis as recommended by the guidance councilor.” …show more content…

The girls only leave both Ken and Ib alone when someone calls them by their “grown up,” or real names. When their real name is used they grow up and lose a sense of their imagination. On page 49 Ken questions Ib on why she did not respond when he called for her, Ib responds with; “They said I wasn't allowed to go, not while I was in the circle, and they were going to give me cake. I saw it. It had sprinkles on it. And then you called me again and you said ‘Elizabeth.’ And then they made me go away.” This depicts how Kenton and Elizabeth are growing up and has maturing. However, at the end Ib does reclaims her childhood, with taking back her Barbie. It is clear that through this quote the children are becoming young adults and are losing sense of their
