Life’s Greatest Lesson
“Learn to live a little!” Most people have heard this expression, but learning to live isn’t to just stop taking life seriously, it’s about learning how to die. This aphorism of learning how to die is how you learn to live is used again, and again throughout the book, “Tuesdays with Morrie”. First, Morrie shows how he learned how to live after dealing with ALS, which will slowly kill him. Second, people who are afraid and scared of death are the ones who will have unsatisfied and envious lives. Finally, The fact of how learning to die also has people become less ambitious about their job and becoming really wealthy, but instead focusing more on personal connections and relationships. When you realize you are going to die, you see everything more differently.” (Albom, 83). For instance, Morrie doesn’t care as much about dying, but more about not being able to talk and help out others because of his ALS. “...living means I can be responsive to the other person. It means I can show my emotions and my feelings...When that is gone, Morrie is gone.” (Albom, 162). In particular, Morrie now only cares about the important questions and not death anymore, although he is dying. “Once you get your fingers on the important questions, you can't turn away from them...they have to do with love, responsibility, spirituality, awareness.” (Albom, 175). Specifically, Morrie’s house becomes a wealthy house of love and family, it has nothing to do with money, but because of all the students and colleges, and others the house changed drastically. “The day he learned he was terminally ill was the day he lost interest in his purchasing power...yet the house had changed so drastically. People can keep from envying others by finding what’s good in their age in the present and not envying younger people because you are aging, “You have to find what’s good and true and beautiful in your life as it is now.” (Albom, 120). Most of Tuesdays with Morrie consists of replays of conversations between Mitch and his former teacher, Morrie. This may seem like a pretty boring topic, yet Mitch Albom felt the need to write this book. Mitch could have easily just gone to visit his old professor, chatted with him, and left it at that. Why do you think that Mitch Albom felt the need to share his story? What do you spend money on and how can you save for things? What does society teach us about money, wealth, and greed?
For anger, in the mornings he will say to himself, “what in the hell did I do to deserve this!” He also becomes depressed and cries throughout the nights and into the mornings, but tells himself to stop. Morrie also accepts his death, and says many things such as “fear of death means life without meaning” and that he wants to be a living textbook.

Morrie get his method of detachment from the Buddhist philosophy: One should not cling to things, as everything that exists is impermanent. In detaching, Morrie is able to step out of his material surroundings and into his own type of world where he has time to relax and think more about the type of world that his loved ones live in. Morrie does not intend to stop feeling this detachment, but instead he wants to experience it wholly because it is only then that he is able to let go, to think about something other than the stressful situation that he is in. He does not want to die feeling upset, and in these frightening moments, he detaches himself so that he may accept the short span of his life and accept his death, which he knows may come at any time.
Some people spend their lives working towards the coming of their death, and their life thereafter, where others spend their lives doing everything they possibly can to make the most of their time on earth. In Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom, the lead character Morrie Schwartz was diagnosed with the fatal disease Lou Gerrig’s Disease, also known as ALS. Although many people would fall into a deep pit of self-loathing and regret, Morrie Schwartz took the opportunity to teach people about life and love. He surrounded himself with friends, and loved ones in his final days. Contrary to Morrie’s attitude, Lear, in William Shakespeare's King Lear, treats death as a negative thing in his life, fearing it, and running from it.
One of the quotes, “learn how to die and you learn to live”, is when Morrie realizes near the end of his life that his perspective of the world changed as his window in life grew smaller (Albom, 1997, p. 82). His view of life transformed into appreciating simple interactions with the people he loved and cherishing the moments of leaving behind a legacy when he accepted death. To me, this quote means to revel in the moment, treasure the present, live memorably, appreciate the people who mean the most to you, and to live life to the fullest. Another quote, “aging is not decay but growth”, is what Morrie was finally able to translate in the final chapters of his life (Albom, 1997, p. 118). Morrie felt a sense of fulfillment of his years in life and savors the time he has remaining as death looms closer.
Morrie’s message was, in short, not to become preoccupied with death and dying, but to live the life that you still have left in a meaningful and rewarding way. He believed that although death would soon take him, he wanted to teach others and share his ideas so that they could be passed on to future generations.
I learned from the book that a former student reconnected with his old college professoi Morrie who was diagnosed with ALS (a terminal disease). Through their reconnection, Mitch and Morrie begin to meet every Tuesdays to discuss the different problems they face and the meaning of life. Also, choosing not to live his final months in fear. One thing that we often hear is that “death is just a part of life.” So often in our day and age do we hear people utter these words. However, death is far more significant and impactful than some would allege. True death is not merely a time when we cease to exist; it is an entombment, a mindset in which we are dead to this world. Throughout our lives, it is true that we can all be dead in one way or another, but it does not have to be that way. As a young girl at 14, I used to reminisce about the future, how badly I wanted to grow up, to drive, to be popular in high school, go to college and land an amazing job, have a huge home, nice cars, and an extremely handsome husband. The older I got, the more I began to realize all of the things I once desired for were not what I truly wanted. I began to realize the value of happiness, adventure, and creating memories rather than the value of temporary popularity, material items, and physical appearances. What I realized was that when one is lying on their deathbed, because the only thing guaranteed in life is death, they will not think, “oh what a lovely car I drove” but rather, “I remember when I went on my first road trip with my friends.” As mentioned in “Tuesdays With Morrie” by Mitch Albom, Morrie emphasizes the idea, “once you learn how to die, you learn how to live,” meaning, remembering that one day we will all depart from this world, one will realize what it truly means to live. Although thinking about death is a harsh reality on a young teenager, it is rather helpful to wrap our heads around it at a young age. Why? because as one grows older, they will see more death.
