Response-to-literature essay. ‘Ever World. Search for Senna’ by K.A. Applegate
People change. They have always changed, they do change and they will change their personalities throughout their lives. When people are in their childish age they have features such as irresponsibility, moodiness, self-centered, whining, childish fears but by time they change to tolerance, responsibility, intelligence, prudence. Many reasons can provoke for these turns like death of loved ones, self- improvement, disease and many other reasons. In the book called “Ever World. Search for Senna” by K.A. Applegate there are the main characters who face some problems which change them, especially David Levin’s, who was the narrator of the “Ever World”. Entering the mysterious world called Ever World changes the personality of David forever.
David is the main character who is “a junior, not just ‘a’ new kid in school, he was ‘the’ new kid ” who is dating with Senna Wales. As a child he was “jumping around, looking at all the wrong things, missing what he supposed to get and getting things no one else thought were important. When he was 13 he was skate- board trouble guy. Now he does not know who he is .” While I was reading the book he seemed to me as a brave, mature and caring boy. Because of his trouble past a reader may think that he is a coward boy but, in my opinion, cowardice is present in all of us and there is no shame in being a coward sometimes. However, during the novel David tries his best to change from a coward loser to the mature man.
Before being absorbed into the Ever World at the beginning of the novel David seems to be an ordinary boy with usual teenage problems: he fights with his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend to prove that he is worthy to ...

...ver World changed David’s character in a better way – even though he still is a kind, soft and caring guy that loves Senna and cares about her, he also has traits that a real mature man would have like leadership, strength, he keeps his promise to save his girlfriend and does everything to do it, he still has fears but isn’t ruled by them. This novel not only taught David and his friends a lesson but also readers, in this case I learned that people have to be together to achieve the results; if a person makes a promise he must keep it no matter what, and as Leo Buscaglia says: “The easiest thing to be in the world is you. The most difficult thing to be is what other people want you to be. Don't let them put you in that position.” humans need to love themselves just the way they are because each of us are unique and with our limitations we also have the advantages.
The greatest conflict in the book was Man vs. Man for David, because he had to face his childhood of when his sister June had died due to down syndrome. This internal conflict led to the guilt he experienced when dealing with the secret of giving his daughter Phoebe away and lying to Norah(his wife) that Phoebe had died at birth. Norah and the family later realised Phoebe was alive but in that time frame before that the family was falling apart.
Maturity changes the way people think act and behave towards other people, David the main character displays this clearly as his view on his Father and Uncle Frank develop and change. At the beginning when we are first introduce to all the characters , we see that David admires Uncle Franks as being a hero and just a all round qualities. But this is all changes when David later on discovers that Uncle Frank molesters and take advantage of Indian woman with his power as a doctor. “After what just happened with Marie I don’t want to be left alone with Uncle Frank”. Davis father is a sheriff, a very unique one as he does not wear a badge or carry any gun. He comes off as envious toward Hugh life and you don’t start to see that until paragraph 7. He uses phrases such as, “Compared with Hugh’s, my childhood was unspeakably dull” and, “When I’m told such stories, it’s all I can do to hold back my feelings of jealousy.” (P. 227). He goes on and on about how Hugh has everything that he’s ever wanted until the end of the essay; where David sees himself as Hugh kind of. There’s some humor to this essay as well.
Life is a complicated process. It’s filled with many things that keep it interesting but at the same time, very dull. Life’s what you make it and for many, it’s something we all strive for. In the story, The Space Between, the author takes full advantage of the premise as there’s rarely a dull moment- as in life. The book is filled with many literary devices that work nicely with the plot and dialogue. These include; metaphors, similes, irony, personification, and many more. We follow a young man who is finding his way in the world. He has only a week to change his life for the better. But he will face many obstacles on the way that brings the readers into a startling and fun journey.
David demonstrates confusion with his sense of belonging in society by identifying as a homosexual, yet wanting to live a structured life like what society qualifies it to be between men and women. In the book the reference of not qualifying homosexuals as men is especially defined in the scene where David and Giovanni argue before parting ways; ' ' 'I can have a life with (Hella). ' (…) 'What kind of life can two men have together anyway? (…) You want to go out and be the big laborer and bring home the money, and you want me to stay here and wash the dishes and cook the food and clean this miserable closet of a room and kiss you when you come through that door and lie with you at night and be your little girl (…) But I 'm a man, ' ' '(142). This quote implies that David is still brain washed by society 's views of gender role, and since there are no defined roles for the life of homosexuals, David is thus pro-pulsed towards leaving his true identity as a homosexual behind in order to have a structured life. The vast majority of people grow up with the idea of having a life similar to that of their parents '. David must pretend, not just for the remainder of the novel, but for the next forty years, to be ignorant of Frank’s crimes, and much of what is happening because his parents do not realise that he has overheard their discussions.
1. In the book, the father tries to help the son in the beginning but then throughout the book he stops trying to help and listens to the mother. If I had been in this same situation, I would have helped get the child away from his mother because nobody should have to live like that. The father was tired of having to watch his son get abused so eventually he just left and didn’t do anything. David thought that his father would help him but he did not.
He tries to explain that in order to be happy, one must put himself in other people's shoes, to know that there is another world that you must enter that revolves around another individual. A person must learn that he must look at both sides of the road before crossing the road of judgment. Meaning that a person must think twice before judging someone due to the fact that you are incapable off reading other people's minds thus you cannot make a judgment about how tough their lives are and the daily hardships that they have to put up with. Before you start complaining about how long the line at the store is, realise that you are not the only person waiting in line and that there are other people waiting in line too just like you are. David uses plenty of metaphors and examples in order to further explain to the audience his statement. One example he uses in the beginning of the story is the fish example, where two young fish meet an older fish who asks them "how is the water", the two young fish then go on to reply by saying "what the hell is water?". After reading through the story, one realises that what the author means by 'water' is that in this scene, water is the representation of life. Thus you can think of it as the older fish asking the
Throughout the rugged and cruel terrain of the Italian race, Dave moves his way up through the crowd of racers to meet up with the Cinzanos. Once Dave meets up with the Cinzanos during the race, his dreams are fulfill making him immensely happy which is seen on his, gigantic crescent shaped smile. The Cinzanos seem as a pleasant and friendly group allowing Dave to go ahead of them, until they catch back up to him only to shift the gears of his bike. Showing that the Cinzanos do not want another member of their group, but Dave just thinks they are giving him a hard time until they force him of the terrain. The look in Dave’s eyes after the forceful and rude act of running him off the terrain shows that he has a clearer view of life. After the horrendous incident during the Italian race, Dave changes. He stops acting Italian and starts acting like a cutter. He does this because he learns that everything isn’t what it appears to be and realizes that he should be proud to be a cutter, and that is why he tells Katie who he actually is even though he knows it will end
Throughout the novel the characters are put in these situations which force them to obtain information about the people they thought they knew. The center of finding out who everyone is was brought into play through the death of Marie. The story is told by David, only twelve years old, who sees his family an community in a different light for who they truly are under there cover. By doing his own little investigations, often times eavesdropping, David saw through the lies, secures and betrayals to find the truth.

David, the main character in the book, realizes that his girlfriend Hilary has cheated on him. To make things even worse she is cheating with one of his friends from the football team, Sam. David tries to talk to Hilary but she thinks he hasn’t been the same since his mother died about a year ago. Later, David beats up Sam at a party.
When you are born people are there to take care of you, love you, and guide you through life. As you grow up and life changes, you must take charge of your own life and not become so dependent on others. Throughout the course of life a person will encounter many changes, whether good or bad. In 'A&P';, 'The Secret Lion';, and 'A Rose for Emily';, the main characters in the stories are Sammy, the boys, and Miss Emily who face changes during their lives. All of these characters are in need of change. Because of their need for change, their lives will become much better. They are filled with wonder and awe about the world around them. No matter what type of person, everyone will encounter changes. It is part of the natural process. A person is encouraged to make these changes for the good. Sammy, the boys, and Miss Emily all encounter changes in their lives that fulfill their need to become something different.
He has extremely low confidence and belief in himself which is to be expected since he is in unfamiliar territory. His father tries to teach David the ways his grandfather taught him. David’s father is a responsible hunter, he only hunts what is legal and not threatening them, “Are we going to shoot him? […] We don’t have a permit” (Quammen 420). One of the steps to adulthood is learning to be responsible when others are not around, at the age of 11, David learns young but rather unfortunately in the end. Morals and values are an important step to adulthood, like Albert Einstein once said “Try not to become a man of success. Rather become a man of value.” Having a solid set of values and good morals could be the difference in many of David’s future choices, and his father set him on the right path from an early age even though their relationship had several issues. This starts the journey to David’s mental strength shown throughout the story because it brings the right versus wrong to the center of attention. Taking care of family, taking care of the environment and the animals that inhabit the environment and not taking life for granted as he might have before tragedy struck are all part of the journey to adulthood. David’s father was extremely bothered by the moose that had been shot many times by a small caliber hand gun and the scene showed no signs of an attack; a senseless killing of an animal that was left to rot in a pond.
