My exhibition pitch for the tower of London is medieval crime and punishment for witches. I believe that this would be a valuable exhibition to have. It would teach how superstitious the people in medieval times were. Many women and men were killed during the middle ages by simply just being accused of practicing dark magic which was associated with the devil.
In the early Middle Ages, witches were regarded as just harmless old people, makers of potions and fortune tellers. At that time the Church did not see that as a way of being associated with the devil. In the 5th Century AD St. Augustine, an influential Christian claimed that all pagan magic and religion were invented by the Devil to distract people from God. Now magic was a crime against society and crime against God.
Now that witchcraft was officially a crime it had to be punished. Many punishments were used and many were unfair. Most forms of torture to get the accused to confess were cruel and trials by ordeal were often difficult to impossible to pass. Some of the devices used for torture and for trials will be constructed as accurately as possible and put on display in the exhibition to help people to understand how these devices were used and how cruel they could be.
The first device that will be built and put on display is the ducking stool. The ducking stool was specifically used as a torture method for women. The device was a chair that was hung off of a free-moving arm. The woman was strapped into the chair and the device placed beside a river. The arm would then be swung over the river then the woman would then be lowered into the freezing cold water. The length of time they would stay underwater based on was decided by the person controlling the chair and the crime of that the woman was accused of.
