Torture has been a security system for many countries for a long time. Torture is “any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental is intentionally inflicted on person for such purpose as obtaining from him or a third person information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed” (Bassiouni 418). Torture is a very complicated subject, because there are many ways of torture like waterboarding, beating, head-slapping, and electro-shock. Also there are many reasons that push governments to torture some people that made this topic controversial. Even though many governments believe that torture is a good way to keep the nation secure, the American government should not use torture because it’s inhumane, does not give useful information, and is against domestic human rights laws.

There are many ways of torture and one of them is waterboarding. Waterboarding is a method of torture that involves pouring water over the victim’s face. This causes the victim to feel like he is drowning. There are a range of methods used in waterboarding. One of them is placing a cover over the victim’s face and pouring water over the mouth and nose. Waterboarding has many side effects on the person who is being tortured. The person will suffer from extreme pain, brain damage, broken bones, or death: “Waterboarding could cause hypoxia, a condition in which the body is not getting enough oxygen, either because the victim is holding his or her breath or inhaling water -- and inadequate oxygen supplies can lead to deadly organ failure” (Ballantyne). Every human life is unique and should be rewarded with respect. The way torture uses a terrorist as a way to gain information, you take away from that person his freedom. They have become under the rule of others, but being used for an advance of other. Every human has the right to live free and torture is against that. Therefore, the United States should stop torture because it would not make the United States a safer place. Also, it’s inhumane because they use cruel ways in torture. That makes the person suffer his whole life or cause that person’s death. Most of the time terrorists lie or give useless information so they can survive. Finally, torture is against domestic human rights laws, and the United States should follow the human rights laws.
