Shirley Jackson’s short story ”The Lottery” uses details and word choice to convey a suspicious tone. The lottery is a game of chance and over time people have grown to the idea that if you win a lottery the prize is positive, however, Shirley Jackson story says otherwise. Jackson includes details that show this on page 33 when she writes “... went over to his wife and forced the slip of paper out of her hand.It had a black spot on it...”(Lines 304-305). This creates suspicion because if she had a paper with a mark on it why would she hide it. When I first read this story I suspected something.
