In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout a young girl in Maycomb, Alabama starts to realize many incidents, which lead to losing her innocence. Firstly, Scout loses her innocence when she realizes Maycomb is a racist community. Secondly, she realizes that not everything in life is fair. Finally, she realizes that she shouldn’t look at someone and judge him or her by what the society sees him or her. Scout loses her innocence throughout her realizations of the world. Throughout the book, Scout realizes that Maycomb is a very racist community. First, Scout’s cousin Francis makes fun of Scout’s dad Atticus. “He’s nothin’ but a n*****-lover!” (110) This is very significant because Atticus is Francis’s uncle and Francis shouldn’t be treating an uncle like that. Mrs. Dubose also insults Atticus “Your father’s no better then the n****** and trash he works for!” (135). Scout loses innocent because her own cousin and old women are making fun of her dad. This shows how racist people are just because a white man is defending a black man people start insulting that man. When Scout and Jem went to the church with Calpurnia, a women name Lula says, “You ain’t got no business bringin’ white chillun here they got their church, we got our’n” (158). When it comes to white people coming to the black’s church she really starts getting angry. She says how they are not allowed at white peoples church and white people are not allowed at black peoples church. This shows how Maycomb County is racist because there are two races black and white that dislike like each other. This is how Scout realizes Maycomb is racist. Scout realizes that everything in life is not fair. During the school day Miss Caroline the teacher requests Walter a quarter. There is a reason why he is pretending to be drunk because he is married to a black woman who he loves so when people ask they would know why he loves her because he is drunk he does not know what he is doing. He is pretending to the society that he is drunk but actually he is not. Don’t judge someone by the society judges them as but how you judge them as. In conclusion, Scout realized that Maycomb County is racist because of what happened at the church. Second, she realized that everything is not fair because Tom’s case. Finally, judge someone how you see them as not how the society judges them as. Boo was known as an evil guy but at the end he saved two people’s lives Scout and Jem. Scout loses her innocence at a young age because of all the realizations she had to go through,
