“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends” J.K. Rowling. In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird ,Set Maycomb Alabama during the prejudice 1930’s, characters show that courage is needed to survive the unpleasant times. This theme occurs in Tom Robinson’s court case when he is falsely accused of rape. Heck Tate, a respectful, well mannered man and the Maycomb County Sheriff, learns the importance of courage and standing up for what you believe in during the course of the novel. The first place Heck Tate shows his absence of courage is when he hands the gun over to Atticus when he needs to shoot the mad dog. Being a sheriff should have put Mr.Tate in a position to be able to shoot a gun, but coincidently he is unable to in a time of need.” ‘Don’t just stand there, Heck! Tate shows he has grown a lot and has gained enough courage to stand up for Boo. When Boo kills Bob Ewell while he is trying to protect Jem and Scout Heck Tate is the only person trying to defend Boo. “ ‘Mr. Finch,’ Mr. Tate said stolidly. ‘Bob Ewell fell on his knife. He killed himself.’ “(Lee 366). All Heck Tate wants to do protect is protect Boo from the public praise, which Boo does not like. Mr. Tate has finally gained enough courage to do what he thinks is right even with obvious disapproval from Atticus. He does not care what the public or his peers will think about him. This is the first time Heck Tate stands up for what he believes in and shows he has the courage to protect others even when he could be the enemy in the public's eye.
