The process of making a decision previously held two paths, rational and irrational, with rational having the mind at work to think about what were the choices and irrational with no really engagement. Anything beyond that process of thought was not taken until the topic of System 1 and System 2 along with effects of “Relativity” were expressed in Thinking Fast and Slow, by Kahnemna and Predictably Irrational by Ariely, respectfully. Along with the other readings, the process of our decision making were no longer solely based on two very simplified and underdeveloped ideas, but as series of network and systems of decisions the minds functions through.

Levitin introduces a four system mind, with a mind-wandering mode, an central executive, an attentional filter and an attentional system. The mind wandering-mode is very similar to the System 1 in which they are automatic and based on impressions. The central executive is similar to System 2 where it is alert and used to stay on task and concentrate. Lindstrom gives examples of purchases done by strong associations, as making association help make decisions. However association could also be negative and the sequence of the elements in association matter. These associations and the sequence they are introduced can have an effect to raise or lower the quality of a choice, having a “halo effect”. These associations can be seen in practice at nice restaurants and hotels, the entry or atriums are made very welcoming and guests are immediately greeted. First impressions are tried to be ensured to be the best.
I have come across websites that have begun to use this to a certain extent. Opening a shopping site I am greeted by a colorful popup that says “Hello, welcome”, or something similar. At first I was reluctant to find it welcoming as my initial association with an pop-up is negative. But I was surprised to find a welcoming sign to my initial visit. Since then, many shopping sites I visit have a welcome and discount popup that is expected. I how becomes a norm that many sites do. But with the first site it was the welcoming that I have now associated and automatically go to the site for several
