Tone and Setting Are Being Uses in “The Necklace” and “The Lottery” to Show The Characters of Mathilde Losiel and Tessie Hutchinson For one thing, the authors of “The Necklace” and “The Lottery” uses similar technique of the literary elements as part of their short stories to connect the characters with their audience in stories. The author of the “The Necklace,” Guy de Maupassant uses tone to demonstrate the character’s mood and uses the setting to imply the cause that the character experiences. As well, the author of “The Lottery,” Shirley uses tone and setting to demonstrate the character’s state of mind and uses the setting to indicate the cause that the character experience. According to Guy de Maupassant, this author mentions that “Oh, nothing. Only I don’t have an evening dress and therefore I can’t go to that affair. Give the card to some friend at the office whose wife can dress better than I can,” and “No…there’s nothing more humiliating than to look poor among a lot of rich woman.” Mathilde’s husband as nice as the woman in the story “Thank You Ma’am” when he offer his wife to buy a new dress. On the other story, the author of “The Lottery” uses tone to convey the character’s action. The author starts by introduce the character into the story during the time where everyone is gather at one place nearby the school and the bank.
