For the duration of Romeo and Juliet, the theme passion determines power progresses through each act. While I was viewing Romeo, I found it evident that his passion had expressed who he truly was as a character. Shakespeare uses the theme passion determines power to display Romeo’s impulsivity.

Romeo's passion for peace powers him to take action in a conflict. During the fight between Tybalt and Mercutio, Mercutio is unintentionally wounded and dies soon after. This is a result of Romeo trying to stop the fight by physically getting in between the two. Before Tybalt becomes physical with Mercutio, he initially intends on fighting Romeo. However, Romeo informs him that he is not interested in getting involved in a fight.

“Tybalt, the reason that I have to love thee
Doth much excuse the appertaining rage

Romeo's passion for Juliet powers him to forget his past life. Romeo has the ability to reach Juliet because he concludes that the emotion of love overpowers his other feelings. Romeo acts this way because his love for Juliet is a high priority in his life. Romeo proves this by stating that he will stay on Capulet grounds because of his dedication for forgetting the name “Montague.” Romeo proclaims this on the night they meet, showing that he is quick to think.

“And I’ll still stay, to have thee still forget,
Forgetting any other home but this.”
(Act II, scene II)

Romeo exposes this without knowing if he honestly loves Juliet. They encounter each other on the same night Romeo proclaims this, even though Romeo is unaware of who she truly is.
