Throughout the play A Streetcar Desire by Tennessee Williams, the progression of the character Blanche DuBois is followed as she gradually loses touch with reality. In fact, it is symbolized by light and darkness, which contrast reality and the fantasy world Blanche creates for herself. Undoubtedly, the light conveys reality and Blanche’s past, while the darkness displays an escape from reality. First, light represents the ruthless reality that Blanche tries to ignore. Indeed, bright light is first brought to her life when she meets her first love Allan Grey: “He was a boy, just a boy, when I was a very young girl. When I was sixteen, I made the discovery – love. All at once and much, much too completely. It was like you suddenly turned a blinding light on something that had always been half in shadow, that’s how it struck the world for me.” (6.114). Bright light represents love and the happiness, dignity and mental clarity it brought to her life. However, the light that Allan illuminated her with was so bright that it blinded her from the truth, which led to her husband’s suicide. It is what triggered her mental decline and the creation of her own darkness: “The searchlight which had been turned on the world was turned off again and never for one moment since has there been any light that’s stronger than this — kitchen — candle.” (6.115). The great amount of shock and guilt caused by the suicide of Blanche’s first love killed the bright light, leaving nothing but a very dim light. The sudden darkness leaves her in a state of panic and extreme guilt, which she tries to tame with intimacies with strangers. She is haunted by what she has lost: her first love, her wealth, her family, her dignity and Belle Reve. Dim light therefore represents her losses and the past she cannot forget. Ultimately, bright light represents her past without darkness and dim light portrays the demons she cannot escape
