The Necklace Questions 1. In “The Necklace” there are several types of conflict within the story. The first is human vs society. This is demonstrated by the fact that the main character feels that she is born into a low standard of living and struggles to be in a higher class. Another example of conflict is human vs self. When Mathilde looses the necklace she struggles with herself and is to proud to admit that she had lost the necklace and if she had summed up the courage to admit to Madame Forestier that she had lost her necklace her live would have gone much differently. Mme. Loisel is scornful at the invitation because she thinks she is to poor and does not have enough nice things to go to a fancy event and is scared people will judge her. 5. She chooses the necklace because the necklace symbolized what Mme. Liosel wants to be, a expensive and beautiful person. 6. Mme. Loisel’s life changes with her becoming more poor which makes her give up some of the luxuries she had before she lost the necklace. She also becomes less beautiful and more strained. She changes on the inside by becoming a more honest and less lustful character. When the necklace is revealed to be a cheep fake, it symbolizes Mme. Loisel in the way that she way posing as a wealthy person when in fact she is not. 7. In “The Necklace” the narrator is a 3rd person omniscient narrator. With this the narrator could have revealed that the necklace was a fake from the moment she had first laid eyes on it, however I do not think this is cheating as just because a narrator does have information does not mean they have to reveal it. 8. “The Necklace” has two main themes that go hand in hand, the first being pride. This is shown by the fact that Mme. Loisel is to proud to admit to her friend that they lost the necklace. The second theme is honesty and that it is better to face the truth than to live in a
