Tobias Wolff’s Profound Literature Elements Many people believe Tobias Wolff is considered much of a critic mainly because his childhood was affected by his parent’s separation. Little by little, he started to become like a critic until he went to the army. Furthermore, when he came back he became more pessimistic than critical some might say. His short stories are acknowledged by many readers because of the true meaning of aspirations some people could think they can make out of it. Some say Wolff created a new thinking perspective by creating the short story “Bullet in the Brain”. The reason readers say that is because the story ends up being more profound that they would have thought when they read it from the beginning. The reason for that is because Wolff seems to be using negativity from his life into the short story’s main character personality. He characterizes this man as if everything is wrong with people and nothing is wrong with him, which makes him a pessimistic person. Throughout the story, Wolff displays multiple scenes where he uses his personal feelings in order to explain the characters thoughts. “…in fact, it is an attempt to show…how these different forms of ideology change people’s view toward life and thus change their whole lives” (Farid, Sohrabi). Farid and Sohrabi prove that Wolff’s lifestyle does have an effect on the “Bullet in the Brain” story. As Anders describes the two women, readers can see that Wolff’s biography directly correlates with the tone that he is using. However, near the robbery scene the tone becomes more intense and serious. Wolff utilizes vivid descriptions in order to make an excellent cause and effect.
