In his short story, O’Brien intentionally chooses words and phrases that evoke emotion in his readers. On page 137 he says “This is one story I’ve never told anyone before. Not to anyone. Not to my parents, not to my brother or sister, not even my wife.” This statement creates a sense of intimacy with the reader, because he has never shared it with anyone else, and he is choosing to share it with us. It also allows the reader to feel a bit of the author’s shame behind being so embarrassed to share this story that he’s never even told the people closest to him. Before O’Brien was drafted into the army, he had an all American childhood. As talked about “His mother was an elementary school teacher, his father an insurance salesman and sailor in World War II” (O’Brien). He spent his tour of duty from 1969 to 1970 as a foot soldier. He was sent home when he got hit with a shrapnel in a grenade attack. O’Brien says as the narrator, “As a fiction writer, I do not write just about the world we live in, but I also write about the world we ought to live in, and could, which is a world of imagination.” (O’Brien)
When the quote says “that part of the story is my own” it must mean O’Brien had taken some true details from personal stories. Could O’Brien taken true information but tried to throw the readers off to keep some privacy for the men the stories were based off? Some of the stories present within the book are completely out of the water. How could O’Brien imagine those ideas up without a base of what actually happened? I believe O’Brien switched the names of the soldiers but kept the stories. If he did the name switching it could emphasize on how the reader could focus on the ideas and situations, not the people. O’Brien would showcase how these situations can affect everyone. Another challenging aspect for me is if the stories are partly true why not honor those written about. After an event of large magnitude, it still began to take its toll on the protagonist as they often “carried all the emotional baggage of men who might die” during the war (O’Brien 1187). The travesties that occurred with the brutality of war did not subside and began to affect those involved in a deeply emotional way. The multitude of disastrous happenings influenced the narrator to develop a psychological handicap to death by being “afraid of dying” although being “even more afraid to show it” (O’Brien 1187). The burden caused by the war creates fear inside the protagonist’s mind, yet if he were to display his sense of distress it would cause a deeper fear for those around him, thus making the thought of exposing the fear even more frightening. It is meant to capture the heart and mind of the readers and take them on a journey through war with the O’Brien, as he experienced and felt it.
He uses the same diction, with different variations of the word "shame" to indicate his unwillingness to reveal his disgraceful actions, emphasizing indignity and ignominy. Seven times O'Brien reiterates different variations of shame; for example, "To go into it, I've always thought, would only cause embarrassment for all of us, a sudden need to be elsewhere, which is the natural response to a confession." O'Brien's uneasiness about revealing his story highlights the difficulty most individuals have with confessions. The usage of embarrassment is an indication of his fear to come to terms with past actions; in this particular case, O'Brien wants to squirm and hide, highlighting his nervousness and discomfort. The use of repeated words such as confession highlights the process that one must face guilt and humiliation with a confession. O'Brien uses embarrassment and shame in this sentence to highlight the fact that he lacked the courage to disclose his story. As O'Brien continues, he employs the use of another word related to shame; for example, "For more than twenty years I've had to live with it, feeling the shame, trying to push it way, and so by this act of remembrance, by putting the facts down on paper, I'm hoping to relieve at least some of the pressure on my dreams." He carries around photos and letters from her. However, the first few chapters illustrate how this profound love makes him weak in the war.
The Things They Carried is a funny little book in the sense that it isn’t told how most books are. It goes from war to camping on the borderline of Canada, back to war, and then into present day times. It works marvelously well, showing you what actually happened and then what he thought about what happened and what he could have done to change the outcome. There are many things that I think people can learn from his experiences in the Vietnam war and the way he tells those stories and lessons really bring you along for the ride.
Several stories into the novel, in the section, “How to tell a true war story”, O’Brien begins to warn readers of the lies and exaggerations that may occur when veterans tell war stories.
