The genre of a story can’t truly be known without the proper setting. The setting and a storyline tie together creating the perfect background for characters to truly live their roles. In “Young Goodman Brown”, Goodman Brown is faced with the conflict of giving in to true evil or remaining pure. The setting; a dark, mystical and haunting place connects perfectly with the idea of Brown being faced with taunting devil-like temptations. Hawthorne’s short story would be incomplete without this kind of geographical location, proving that setting does infact provide significance for a storyline.

Each of these elements affect the influence it has on the short story, making it more appealing to readers. An important feature this setting portrays is when Goodman Brown decides to begin his journey. Faith, his wife, explains how she didn’t want him to leave her that night, “of all nights of the year" (Hawthorne 183). Following, Brown stresses that the embarkment on this journey had to take place "`twixt now and sunrise" (Hawthorne 183). The two quotes from these characters helps readers comprehend that he will be leaving during the middle of the night on Halloween. As people know, nighttime is when evil explores its surroundings and comes alive. This affects Goodman Brown. Halloween, infamous for the spiritual creatures; ghosts and witches. Both of these creatures are well known for their evil routes. Hawthorne connecting both the setting and mystical devil-like features, creates a possible event that might lie ahead in Goodmans future.
