From the begining of the story, the author presents the character of Aylmer as a great scientist very invested in his profession. He has a great confidence in himself and spends much time in his laboratory, trying to invent many new experiments, for example : « He had devoted himself, however, too unreservedly to scientific studies ever to be weaned from them by any second passion ». However, its purpose is to remove the birthmark on the cheek of his wife. Indeed, he is completely obsessed with this task and spends his days developing a cream which can remove it. Is the aim of Aylmer's obsession with science to reach perfection?

She is in love with her husband, she can feel that her husband is disturbed by it and she is ready to remove it because of love. But one day, Aylmer told her a dream he has made wich was Aylmer who remove the birthmark cutting Georgiana’s cheek and so killing her, that shows that he is really obsessed by the birthmark because he made a dream of that . But she seems to stay indiferent and she wants to do the operation for his husband : « If there be the remotest possibility of it, » continued Georgiana, « let theattempt be made at whatever risk. Danger is nothing to me; for life,while this hateful mark makes me the object of your horror anddisgust, life is a burden which I would fling down with joy. Eitherremove this dreadful hand, or take my wretched life! You have deep science. All the world bears witness of it. You have achieved greatwonders. Cannot you remove this little, little mark, which I cover withthe tips of two small fingers? Is this beyond your power, for the sake ofyour own peace, and to save your poor wife from madness? ». Aminadab appeares like someone well judicious and sensible who tries to change the mentality of Aylmer because he thinks that Aylmer’s reasoning is excessive but he will never change. Aylmer is convinced by his idea and nobody can change him. That shows also that he is obsessed by removing Georgiana’s birthmark. And Georgiana is so in love with Aylmer that she can’t see
