Instead of ya know, kicking him out, the narrator decides he can no longer bare looking at the old mans “evil eye.” The eye makes the narrator think of a vulture’s eye, with it’s glazed over blue tint, always watching our narrator. This drives him into madness. He chops up the body and buries the old man under the floorboards. He keeps the man’s death a secret, but the guilt starts to take a toll on our murderer. The evil eye possessed the narrator in a sense. It consumed his mental state. His blood ran cold before the killing but now, the old man’s “beating heart,” increased his “fury.” The heart heated faster and faster. The man declares he is not a “mad man.” Could a mad ,an have been so careful, then again a mad man would kill someone over a glazed eye with no intention of pocketing the money he could have received for a natural case of death. He could have staged the death and made profit and no “beating heart” would have ever made him made. He buried his secret and we all know they come back to haunt
The two short stories of “The Tell Tale Heart” and “The Black cat” by renowned author Edgar Allen Poe exemplifies the darkness of what a person can succumb to in certain situations. Both of these marvels share important realizations of thought and subconscious guilt’s. These short stories are used as an example of how two different people in two different situations can have the same reaction in the way of killing someone without remorse. Anger and hatred are major factors in simultaneous tells. The topic for this discussion is to discuss the similarities and differences of these two short stories by Edgar Allen Poe. In the “Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe, the narrator is extremely uncanny due to the reader’s inability to trust him. Right from the beggining the reader can tell that the narrator is crazy although the narrator does proclaim that he is sane. Since a person cannot trust a crazy person, the narrator himself is unreliable and therefore uncanny. Also as the story progress the narrator falls deeper and deeper into lunacy making him more and more unreliable, until the end of the story where the narrator gives in to his insanity, and the reader loses all ability to believe him.

The police believed nothing was wrong, but the narrator’s guilt consumed him, and he told on himself, causing him to be arrested.

But in a deeper sense, the murder does have a purpose: to ensure that the narrator does not have to endure the haunting of the Evil Eye any longer. To a madman, this is as good of a reason as any; in the mind of a madman, reason does not always win out over emotion.
Poe writes “The Tell Tale Heart” from the perspective of the murderer of the old man. When an author creates a situation where the central character tells his own account, the overall impact of the story is heightened. The narrator, in this story, adds to the overall effect of horror by continually stressing to the reader that he or she is not mad, and tries to convince us of that fact by how carefully this brutal crime was planned and executed. The point of view helps communicate that the theme is madness to the audience because from the beginning the narrator uses repetition, onomatopoeias, similes, hyperboles, metaphors and irony.
The major part of the story was mostly about the guilt of the narrator. The story is about a mad man that after killing his companion for no reason hears a never-ending heartbeat and lets out his sense of guilty by shouting out his confession.
He explains that his disease makes all his senses and especially his hearing, very sensitive as well as acute. The narrator then informs the readers of the events in his past to prove that he isn’t mad. He tells the readers that he loves the old man and has nothing against him, except the old man’s “pale blue eye, with a film over it” (Poe). The narrator explains how he hates the evil eye and whishes to kill the old man, so that he could be free from the eye. He goes on to say that for seven nights he would go to the old man’s room and watch him sleep, but on the eighth night, the old man wakes from hearing the narrator enter the room and from the shadows the narrator sees the evil eye prompting him to kill the old man. When the policeman come to the house, the narrator convents them that nothing bad has happened but because he was feeling confident he invites the policeman to the room to chat. All seems well until the narrator starts to hear the beating of a heart and freaks out and confesses that he murdered the old man. The story is littered with creepy symbols, horrific themes, and psychological effects of guilt and sin that embodies the Dark Romantic style shown through the insane nameless narrator who seeks to kill the old man with the evil
The fixation on the old man's vulture-like eye forces the narrator to concoct a plan to eliminate the old man. The narrator confesses the sole reason for killing the old man is his eye: "Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees - very gradually - I made up my mind to rid myself of the eye for ever" (34). The narrator begins his tale of betrayal by trying to convince the reader he is not insane, but the reader quickly surmises the narrator indeed is out of control. The fact that the old man's eye is the only motivation to murder proves the narrator is so mentally unstable that he must search for justification to kill. In his mind, he rationalizes murder with his own unreasonable fear of the eye.
The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe is a short story that dives into the mind of an insane man. The story only features five characters. There is an old man with a blue eye, the crazed killer, and three police. The story is narrated by the nameless murderer. It is his attempt to justify his behavior and to prove to the reader that he is not crazy. As the story goes on you come to the realization that he is actually insane. The characters in this story are complex, interesting, and elaborate.
According to the story, “ Tell Tale Heart” some think it’s not age appropriate for 8th grade students, and some think its is. The Tell Tale Heart is about the narrator being afraid of the old man’s eye. He’s so afraid of his eye, he decide to take the life of the old man. So he kills the old man and hide his body parts under the floor so that no one would know where his body is at. He ends up telling on himself, because he’s so guilty. And In my opinion I strongly believe that the “Tell Tale Heart” is appropriate for 8th grade students.
