Intelligent and rebellious these two words define Equality 7-2521. These two words which characterize equality will make it impossible for him to live and survive in the collectivist society of Anthem. Intelligent this lone word will pose many problems for Equality in the future. “This is a great sin, to be born with a head which is too quick” (21). In the collectivist society of Anthem it is considered terrible to be smarter than your brothers. This will become a major problem for Equality. He will be born with a head that is too quick thus causing Equality to be superior to all his brothers. Although Equality tried to forget his lessons and not be able to understand him it never worked. “We look upon the light which we have made” (59). In solitary Equality created something which man had never seen before. To get to this discovery Equality first had to conduct experiments. With absolutely no prior knowledge on what he was working on he completely made this discovery from scratch. He starts with a seed and make it into a beautiful beaming yellow sunflower. “It is not good to be different from our brothers, but it is evil to be superior to them” (21). Being intelligent made it absolutely impossible for Equality to confirm into the society. He was looked down on by his teachers, he was lashed more than the other kids. If Equality would have stayed in the Anthem society it would have been unattainable for him to ever fit it making leaving the only valid choice.
