Allyson Laws Professor William Braun Introduction to literature 24 May 2016 Life and Death In Albert Camus’, The Stranger, the reader is taken on a journey through a portion of the main character, Meursault’s, life. Throughout the major events in the story, the reader learns a lot about the personality of our main character. The reader knows him as Meursault, a young man living in Algiers, France. Meursault goes day to day living his monotonous life with zero emotion. Meursault is a bit detached from life and is deathly honest to himself and those around him. Being an atheist, Meursault believes in life and death and nothing beyond that. He does think about the consequences of his actions and isn’t scared of them either. Meursault on the other hand shows that he is quite the opposite. “Maman died today. Or yesterday. I don’t know.” (Camus, 1) The very first sentence the reader reads, Meursault is unsure of what day his mother passed. Not to mention, his calmness and absent mindedness during the vigil and funeral. His thoughts wandered to the decay of the body (8), to smoking in the same room as the casket (8), and to the silent judgements of the people at the vigil (8). At the very end, Meursault even stated that nothing really changed for him (24). He was once a student, but when he had to give it up, he realized it did not really matter (41). When his boss talked to him about a possible relocation and promotion, we got a similar answer to the question Marie asked. “It’s really all the same to me (41).” He stated that people don’t change lives and that “…one life was as good as another and I wasn’t dissatisfied with mine here at all (41).” This same attitude of indifference is shown throughout the whole story.
