He opened the door to the diner and stepped inside. The door slammed shut behind him. It always did that. It was probably the reason why the pane of glass had a jagged crack running from top to bottom. The crack had been there for as long as he could remember. It was a comfortable reminder of why he came here: no one cared here.
He sat in the same place he always sat: a booth in the back near the bathroom. Dorothy, the only waitress this hole-in-the-wall had to offer, acknowledged him with a grunt and asked if he wanted anything.
“Just a cup of coffee and some pancakes, please.” She oinked with indifference and waddled to the kitchen to put in the order. He watched her pour coffee that probably originated from the same batch he ordered last night, and likely the night before. No one cared.
Dorothy wore a peculiar mixture of boredom and haughtiness on her face that was carved in granite. She was quite an ample woman and her huge, pendulous breasts hung down to her navel. Her makeup was applied hastily, as usual, but her blonde hair and the bone structure of her face hinted at a former beauty. The passing of years had not been kind to her, but she no longer cared. The apron she wore to protect her dress might as well have been left at home as both the 'white' apron and the faded pink and blue dress were stained with splotches of food and grease, sweat and shame.
A plate of questionable pancakes was tossed thoughtlessly in front of him; a oily mug of coffee followed. No syrup or butter were offered, as usual. No cream or sugar were offered, as usual. Splattered coffee ran rivulets in the myriad of scrapes and gouges the table had endured over the years. The table mirrored the rest of the place: broken, beaten, abused... and in...

...re coffee?”
“Yes, thank you.” he replied, setting his empty black coffee mug at the edge of the table. Dorothy poured the thick tar-like liquid into the mug and laboriously tottered away. He brought the mug to his lips and took a sip. The stuff was horrible, but caffeine was caffeine and he needed his mind alert. Now that he had another taste he would not be surprised to learn the coffee was from the same batch he drank a week ago.
He stood up after draining the last of the coffee and put on his overcoat and fedora. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a wadded up ball of money, extracted a ten dollar bill, and placed it under his coffee mug. He scooped up the scraps of paper and shoved them into the inner pocket of his overcoat.
As he exited Dorothy squealed something, but he wasn't paying attention to the diner and it's inhabitants anymore. He had work to do.
He then made his daily coffee and toast and took it to the living room sofa, he hated sitting on the table. The
As dusk was abroad, pictures began to climb out of Lennie’s head. The first one was a little fat old woman, wearing bull’s-eye glasses and a huge gingham apron with pockets. She was starched and clean, standing in front of Lennie with her hands on her hips, and frowning disapprovingly at him.
Let’s begin with a little knowledge of Mt. Rainier and Yellowstone. Well, they are both in Washington. Rainier’s last few eruptions had lahars; we know this because of previous paths of destruction. This volcano is dormant, just blowing off a little steam sometimes. The last lahar was 500 years ago. If that happened again,
Volcanoes are one of the most disastrous yet captivating geological land forms on earth. Many volcanic eruptions are catastrophic, but not all volcanic eruptions are as brutal. The two case studies I have chosen to compare and contrast are the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption with the eruption of Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano which is still active today.
Mount Rainier is a volcano that is located in the Cascade Range in Mount Rainier National Park, Washington. This volcano is 14,411 feet (4,392 meters) in its elevation. This is the highest mountain in Washington. This volcano is in the same mountain range as Mount Adams, Mount Baker, Mount St. Helens and Glacier Peak. It is known as a stratovolcano which is a large, steep volcano built up of alternating layers of lava and ash or cinders. This volcano is an active volcano and the last time it erupted was in 1894. The largest eruption this volcano has had was 2200 years ago. It has been recorded that the areas has had a lot of small high-frequency earthquakes. Some of them occur daily. According to geologist the cause of this is hot fluids moving inside the mountain. It is composed of two overlapping volcano crater that are 1000 ft. around. This volcano has three different summits; they are Columbia Crest, Point Success and Liberty cap, the highest which is 14,411 feet and the lowest which is 14,112 feet. It lies on the Juan de Fuca Plate. This is a divergent boundary. It was formed by the subduction of the Juan de Fuca Plate and the North American Plate. This volcano also has lahars which are large mudflows that happen in the deposits of sediments that surrounds volcanoes; they can be hot or cold. This volcano includes but not limited to the rock andesite.
Maunaloa last erupted in 1938 and Kilauea has been erupting since January 3,1938. The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was named a World Biosphere site by UNESCO in 1987. Kilauea is also called the world's only drive-in volcano.
The air hung around them, tensed and quiet. The fragility of her emotion was threatening to shatter. It is as if that time stood still for her. She fingered the brim of her notebook, nervously and took notice of the cup of coffee on her side. Controlling the sudden urged to drown the caffeine all at once; she carefully picked the cup and warily sipped its content. It had long been cold, and her tongue appreciated that fact.
On May 18th, 1980, one of the most prominent volcanic eruptions in US History took place in the state of Washington. Mount St. Helens had been dormant for almost 100 years before March 15th. On this day, two months before the eruption several small earthquakes shook the earth. This indicated a magma buildup below the surface, and the first minor event that would lead to one of the greatest eruptions the US has ever known. Following the first set of earthquakes, “Steam explosions blasted a 60- to 75-m (200- to 250-ft) wide crater through the volcano 's summit ice cap and covered the snow-clad southeast sector with dark ash. Within a week the crater had grown to about 400 m (1,300 ft) in diameter and two giant crack systems crossed the entire summit area. Eruptions occurred on average from
In a subtle way, Brush also makes the wife’s actions selfish. Even though her husband was wrong to react in the way that he did, she was also selfish in her actions. Clearly, her husband has a shy personality because “he was hotly embarrassed” (13) in front of “such few people as there were in the restaurant” (11). Using a couple of this age (“late thirties” (1)), Brush asserts that the wife should have known her husband’s preferences and been sensitive to them. The author also uses the seemingly opposite descriptions the couple: “There was nothing conspicuous about them” (5) and the “big hat” (4) of the woman. The big hat reveals the wife’s desire to be noticed.
Mauna Loa is the largest volcano in the world measuring 2,000 miles². Mauna Loa is 13,677 feet tall, 74 miles long, and 64 wide. On March 24, 1984, at 1:30 in the morning, Mauna Loa began to erupt. This eruption is known as a quiet eruption. The eruption does not cause the volcano to explode or make much of a loud noise. This is due to the basaltic lava and a low amount trapped gases. It just flows a low viscosity lava out of the volcano. When the eruption started, lava started pooling out of the top of Mauna Loa. Within 2-3 hours about 80% of the crater on top of the volcano was submerged in lava. Many worried that the lava would overflow and run to the Mauna Loa Observatory, but the eruption shifted to go northeast rift zone instead. This instead threatened the nearby city of Hilo, populating 40,000 people. The lava headed straight for the town. On the way, the lava reached a generator and left it destroyed. This took out the power for the observatory on the other side of the volcano. This lava that Mauna Loa erupted is a basaltic lava. Basaltic lava silica content is low and only contains 45-55% silica. This makes the magma more liquid and gives it the ability to move quickly. As the lava approaches the vulnerable city of Hilo, many of the people began evacuating. Luckily, the lava stopped at the outskirts of town, burying 16 miles of land owned by the state, never to be seen again. The
Stories about volcanoes are captivating. Myths come in different versions, but all of them are capable of capturing yours, and everybody’s imagination.
Mount St. Helens Location: Washington, United States Latitude: 46.20 N Longitude: 122.18 W height: 2,549 meters or 8,364 feet - 9,677 feet before May 18, 1980 Type: Stratovolcano Number of eruptions in past 200 years: 2-3 Latest Eruptions: Between 1660-1700, around 1800-1802, 1831, 1835, 1842-1844, 1847-1854, 1857, 1980-? Present thermal activity: strong steaming Nickname: Mount Fuji of the West Remarks: continuous intermittent activity since 1980 with occasional eruptions of steam and ash; occasional pyroclastic flows; intermittent dome forming. MSH is considered a young volcano that developed over the last 40,000 years and is one of the most active volcanoes in the Cascade Range. Geologists predicted that the volcano would erupt before the year 2000. The May 18, 1980 eruption of Mount SH was the most destructive in the history of the United States. In a matter of hours, MSH caused loss of lives and widespread destruction of valuable property because of the avalanche, lateral blast and mudflows. On March 20, 1980, starting with an earthquake that was followed by many others, MSH became active again after a quiet period of 123 years. On March 27, 1980, there was a huge explosion and MSH began blowing ash and steam. This lasted until May 14, 1980. The explosion in March opened up two craters that quickly became one huge crater. While this was happening, an enormous bulge on the north side of the mountain top appeared. It grew about six feet each day. Geologist kept measuring the bulge, recording the earthquakes and sampling the ash and gases. By May, the bulge was 300 feet wide and more than one mile in length. On May 18 at 8:32 in the morning, Mount St.. Helens erupted taking the top 1,200 feet off the volcan...
The Mauna Loa volcano is located in Hawaii and means "Long Mountain" in Hawaiian. It is a giant, basaltic shield volcano. It is one of the largest volcanoes and mountains in the world and has been called the "monarch of mountains". It has an estimated volume of 9,600 cubic miles and takes up half the land of Hawaii. It extends about 120 km starting from the southern tip of the island to the northern region. It is 97 km (60 miles) long, 48 km (30 miles) wide, and is 8,742 km (28,680 miles) high from the base on the sea floor to the top. The slopes are steeper than 12 degrees and about 4 degrees at the top of the volcano. Mauna Loa formed about half a million years ago and in the middle stages of forming into a shield volcano where lava flows to form a sloped and broad flat domed volcanic cone. Along with Mauna Kea, the Mauna Loa volcano is responsible for the creation of the Hawaiian Islands. Mauna Loa has erupted thirty-three times since 1843 and is known as one of the most active volcanoes in the world today. The last eruption was 1984 and lava flowed within 4 miles of the city of Hilo. This shows that it is dangerous to live anywhere near Mauna Loa and that it poses as a threat to anyone living near it because it has a very high possibility of erupting within a very short span of time. Below is a picture of Mauna Loa taken from a bird's eye view.
We live in a society that is full of horrific things everywhere we turn. In order to not come in contact with these things we would have to live apart from the media and almost separate ourselves from society altogether. These horrible things are often called sins. Sins are actions that are felt to be highly reprehensible and are also viewed as going against God’s will. Many actions can be viewed as sins, but there are seven sins that are particularly important. These seven sins are lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride. They are infamous for being called the Seven Deadly Sins. A wide variety of works include these sins in order to show society how wrong they truly are. One work in particular is “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment” by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hawthorne’s characters in “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment” all show one or more of the seven sins in one way or another. Hawthorne believed that man was becoming condemnable; therefore, he used his characters to portray that. Hawthorne’s interpretation of humans is quite true because the Seven Deadly Sins appear everywhere in our society. If one was to watch television or use the Internet, he or she would almost certainly discover one of these particular seven sins in a very short amount of time. This is precisely what I found to be true while doing an assignment to find examples of the Seven Deadly Sins for three days.
The play of Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe concentrates very highly on ideas of evil. Marlowe uses many aspects of evil to show the downfall of the somewhat odd man, Faustus. Devices including irony, foreshadowing, and symbolism are used very effectively in the play to convey feelings of sympathy and remorse for Faustus. Actually seeing a production of this play would further assist in an understanding of exactly what Faustus was faced with in his moments of severe weakness. By actually seeing a rendition of what Faustus was faced with, members of the audience can question themselves about what they would have done if they were Faustus. Act 2, Scene 2, lines 115-117 is a very good place to help an audience feel what Faustus was feeling and seeing.
