The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs tells the story of a 19th century woman crossing dressing in order to survive. The film version of Albert Nobbs is similar to the novella in many aspects. Albert Nobbs lives out his normal life until an encounter with Mr. Page causes her to rethink the situation. There are several instances where the movie diverts from the short story. The (AN) is told through a frame work of a man telling the story to his friend. Unlike the movie which is its own singular story. Although the story is explored through different medians the same basis of story of Albert Nobbs life remains. Albert Nobbs in (GC) and (AN) explores loneliness, the effect of identity on one’s life and the secrets formed in order to survive.
The (GC) takes several liberties in the adapting the film for a more contemporary audience. The story behind Albert Nobbs and Hubert Page’s reason for becoming men changes. In the (GC) Albert Nobbs reason for becoming a man is his rape. He decided it was not easy of a woman to survive in Ireland alone. Opposed to the novella Albert chooses to become a man in order to become a waiter as a way to move out of Temple Garden. He understands that men’s jobs pay more than women and at the time he had the figure for it. The reason for this change is perhaps that contemporary audiences would not understand Albert’s reason for changing her gender if the stakes were not higher. The rape entails that there is immediate danger for Albert. Compared to his desperate desire to leave a place he truly hates.

...overtime become a waiter and man. She no longer identifies as being a woman. This fact reigns true for Mr. Page. Even when they are alone in their own homes they continue to stay dressed as men. They have played the role for such a long time they do not know how to be anyone else. Their identity as being a man is as much a part of them as their gender as a woman.
The story of Albert Nobbs questions what it means to identify with one’s self. The film visually explores Albert’s habits of being held captive by his secret. He is seen as very quiet and reserved. The novella explores this solitude through his dream for a companion and his own business. Although the film explores more of Mr. Page’s friendship with Albert than the novella explains, both shows Mr. Page’s impact on Albert’s life. The film still keeps the pitiful element of Albert’s singular life in the plot.
