The shoguns were rulers of Ancient Japan from 1185 with great power over the people of that time and their title was passed down from father to son. The rulers of Shogunate Japan gained and maintained political power though strict isolation, religion and fear. The Shogun isolated Japan in many ways and it was also through religions like Shinto and Buddhism that power was maintained. The people of Japan would have feared the shoguns because they has such great authority. The Shoguns kept Japan isolated from the outside world in numerous ways so that they could maintain power. This helped them maintain power because the people had little knowledge of the rest of the world. During 1633, shogun Lemitsu banned travelling overseas and almost fully isolated Japan by 1639 through limiting contact to the outside world. Japan limited their trade relations to just Netherlands and China, and even killed traders that were washed up on the shore. All foreign books were forbidden.
