Foreign films are often not as popular, especially among people who do not understand the language being spoken. Viewers claim they would rather watch a film, as opposed to reading it because of the provided subtitles. However, The Seven Samurai is a well done film in which the subtitles are not a distracting and the language barrier becomes unnoticed as viewers are engulfed in the dramatic plot. After a group of bandits make plans to capture a village, the villagers are panicked and request help from a samurai. Agreeing to the villagers, the samurai then finds six other samurai to aid in the teaching of the villagers and the defense of the village. Kikuchiyo (Toshiro Mifune), was considered to be the source of amusement for those considered to be the real samurai. He is portrayed to be this angry and comedic character that follows the samurai. However, as the film progresses, the audience is able to see the depth Kikuchiyo has. A memorable scene where Kikuchiyo becomes viewed differently is when he is expressing the hate e has for the farmers and how they hide and have so much more then they let on, but its is the samurai fault they are the way they are and they act the way they do. It is in this scene when it becomes discovered that Kikuchiyo is the son of farmers and he speaks from personal experience. A major dramatic aspect is the realism that occurs through the film. The action scenes in the film are not as stages as they are in modern day. The characters are falling and tripping as they run and fight, and it is not part of the script, but the actors truly falling. The realism is also present when the actors are near a stream, the sounds of the water rushing and when the buildings are on fire, the sounds of the wood cracking and falling. Cinematically, the most memorable shot was when the samurai had run up the hill to put the flag into the ground. It was symbolic of the unity and fight the village as a whole had.
