All dramatic productions feature the elements of drama. Following a viewing of the scene ‘Someone’s crying’ from the 1993 movie ‘The Secret Garden’ three of the elements of drama have been assessed. Role, character and relationships have been utilised in ‘The Secret Garden’ to create anxiety and suspense, enticing the viewer to solve the mysteries the Secret Garden presents. The protagonist in the scene is a young girl, around the age of ten who during the night leaves her room to explore her residence. The protagonist narrates the scene; she begins by stating that the ‘house seems dead like under a spell’. This makes the viewer anxious and fearful for the safety of our young protagonist. Our scene aims to create mystery and suspense. The producer has created this anxiety by beginning the scene in the night. There is darkness and besides the ominous background music and the narration of the protagonist there is mostly silence. Flapping of birds wings in response to a door opening makes the heart beat faster. The birds are startled, so was the viewer. The protagonist is exploring a mansion. The mansion is heritage in comparison to the date of the production however, clothing worn by characters and costumes of those in photographs show that this is set to be a period film dating into the past. There are sheets on furniture, dust and vines on the building’s interior that show that the mansion is old still in comparison to the characters. A period setting and the dark of the night make the scene feel eerie. It is too dark to see properly and this works to create mystery. Crying can be heard and the source is unknown, there is tension as the protagonist is unable to locate the source as they are forbidden by another character with greater dominance. Forbidden territory creates conflict and the viewer is left eager to find out whether the protagonist will obey orders or disobey to solve the mystery. The producer was aiming to create mystery and fear. The dark of the night and the description of the house as feeling dead in the protagonist’s narration sets a suspenseful scene filled with fear and tension. The young girl is followed by the camera as she explores the mansion. When entering the room suspected to be that of her aunts the camera leaves her side to pan around the room. The darkness doesn’t reveal everything but one becomes aware of a search. The revelation of little secrets leaves the viewer with many questions. The room is familiar to the protagonist as she finds items symbolic to her and familiar photographs. This familiarity however does not retract from suspicions that something sinister has been hidden. The producer has successfully captivated the viewer. The protagonist is being followed throughout the scene and has thus allowed for the viewer to bond with them. They are engaging with the audience through narration and have in return enticed the viewer to follow them along their journey. One feels nervous for the young girl however through tension in the scene one does not want them to discontinue the journey as too many questions have been left unanswered. Every story, every book, every legend, every belief and every poem have a reason and a background that creates them. Some might be based on historical events, some might be based on every culture´s beliefs, and some others might be based on personal experiences of the authors. When a person writes a literary piece, that person is looking for a way to express her opinion or her feelings about a certain situation. A good example is the poem “Southern Mansion” by Arna Bonptems. The main intention of “Southern Mansion” could have been to complain, or to stand against the discrimination and exploitation of black people throughout history. However, as one starts to read, to avoid thinking about unnatural beings wandering around the scene that is depicted is impossible. The poem “Southern Mansion” represents a vivid image of a typical ghost story which includes the traditional element of the haunted house. This image is recreated by the two prominent and contradictory elements constantly presented through the poem: sound and silence. The elements are used in two leading ways, each one separate to represent sound or silence, and together to represent sound and silence at the same time. The poem mixes the two elements in order to create the spooky environment.

I believe that “Flowers for Algernon” has a theme that presents itself in several different instances throughout the story: don’t judge a book by its cover. Whether it encompasses the surgery or Charlie’s personal life, the theme still can be used. There were other, less cliched themes that could be found in the story, but this one can be applied to a larger portion of the plot.
Upon finally reaching his home, he is baffled that there are no lights on and the door is locked. When he peers through the windows, the house is empty. The finality of this fact reveals that he has progressed from the suburban life to the muddled old age and emptiness, his misfortunes are real and have caught up with him. No longer can he deny the painful memories of what has occurred in his life through his journey. The semi-surrealism of this journey can in theory be a progression of his life, his mind having gone from clarity of a midsummer's day to the darkness of approaching night and old age, with its frailties and troubles, his lapse of memories coming to clarity in the end.
We feel what the narrator feels, and we only know what the narrator knows. Using first person also allows us to trust the narrator or empathise with the character. The use of imagery or personification increases the suspense in the story, ‘Shadows cower’ is a very descriptive way of showing how. frightening the mansion is. It sounds as if the shadows which are linked to darkness themselves are afraid of greater evil.
In the short story, “The Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allen Poe, diction is extensively used to create an air of suspense. Poe’s use of diction along with symbolism contributes to establishing a mood of despair. By using symbolic comparison between the Ushers and their house, the story’s suspense builds and the characteristics of the Ushers are portrayed. Poe’s cunning tactics are evident in the way he achieves a story of both suspense and horror.
It is said that this book is considered as one of the most famous horror novels, if not the most famous one. The Gothic descriptions in the novel are very prominent at the beginning. The portrayal of the countryside of Transylvania, of the ruined Dracula Castle, etc, all provide the effect of horror in the sense of spooky and gloomy atmosphere, which you can obtain close at hand. Everything is so obvious. The originally beautiful scenes are changed by the writer¡¯s magnification of some specific details which provide certain effect on the readers. All of the above reminds how one¡¯s personal feelings can alter their attitudes towards what they see or what they experience. Sometimes when you are sad, everything look so depressing. It is like the whole world is against you. The sunset could be a fantastic scene when you are filled with joy but an extra source of sorrow when you are not in the mood. Harker is separated from her lovely fianc¨¦e to meet some foreign count in the exotic and unknown eastern world.
The setting gives the reader a sense that terror awaits. This story shows this by talking about the lighting
Everywhere you look, you are able to sense a mood, whether it be in movies, books, or in your everyday life; you can recognize the current atmosphere by taking in certain cues, such as body language, descriptions, words, and sounds. In horror stories, short or long, it is very important to create mood, to engross the reader, and to make the reader feel involved. In “The Tell-Tale Heart”, “A Cask of Amontillado”, and “The Black Cat”, by Edgar Allan Poe, a certain atmosphere is clearly portrayed, through strong descriptions and expressions, and many key details that show foreshadowing and evoke fear in the reader, or make them feel almost vulnerable in their depictions of horror; with all three having the familiar narratives of unreliable narrators, a common human fear, and death.

Darkness is an open door for imagination which can lead to irrational decisions and actions being made. In Cortazar’s “House Taken Over,” the characters hear noises and night and their imagination causes them to be afraid to the point that they abandon that part of their house all together. “We’ll have to live on this side.” (12, HTO) This is the after effect of “it” taking over part of the house in “House Taken Over”. There is darkness in “it” because there is no description of the thing that is taking over the house. The thing that is taking over could be a dark part of the mind. One could say that the reader is ‘left in the dark’ because there is no description of the thing that is taking over the house. Darkness is also used in “The Fall of the House of Usher” when Madeline comes back from the dead and comes to attempt to reproduce with Usher. Instead Madeline kills both of them by scaring her brother to death. “Fell heavily inward upon the person of her brother” (47, FHU). The darkness in this quote is the darkness of the house that is affecting Madeline and made Usher put Madeline into the tomb. In "The Fall of the house of Usher," Edgar Allen Poe creates suspense and fear in the reader. He also tries to convince the reader not to let fear overcome him. Poe tries to evoke suspence in the reader's mind by using several diffenent scenes. These elements include setting, characters, plot, and theme. Poe uses setting primarily in this work to create atmosphere. The crack in the house and the dead trees imply that the house and its surroundings are not sturdy or promising. These elements indicate that a positive outcome is not expected. The thunder, strange light, and mist create a spooky feeling for the reader. The use of character provides action and suspense in the story through the characters' dialogue and actions. Roderick, who is hypochondriac, is very depressed. He has a fearful apperance and his senses are acute. This adds curiosity and anxiety. The narrator was fairly normal until he began to imagine things and become afraid himself. Because of this, the audience gets a sense that evil is lurking. Madeline is in a cataleptic state. She appears to be very weak and pail. Finally, when she dies, she is buried in a vault inside of the mansion. In this story, the plot consists of rising events, conflict, climax, and resolution. The rising events include the parts in the story when the narrator first arrives at the house, meets Roderick, and hears about Roderick's and Madeline's problems. Madeline's death and burial are part of the conflict. At this point, Roderick and the narrator begin to hear sounds throughout the house. The sounds are an omen that an evil action is about to occur. The climax is reached when Madeline comes back from the dead and she and her twin brother both die. Finally, the resolution comes when the narrator escapes from the house and turns around to watch it fall to the ground. The theme that Edgar Allen Poe is trying to convey is do not let fear take over your life because it could eventually destory you.
