2794 years ago, athletes from all over Greece came to Olympia to compete for Zeus, the god of the sky and thunder. They ran, threw discus, jumped, boxed, and wrestled. The first ever recorded event was the stade race, which is a 192-meter sprint to the finish line. Now in modern times things have changed. We have added a plethora of summer and winter sports that includes skiing, shooting, basketball, and swimming. The man who brought the Olympics back after its fourth century demise was Baron Pierre de Coubertin. In 1894 he created the Olympic committee we know today that upholds the rules and regulations to make every event fair. Most rules are for manipulation prevention, so no one tampers with the results.

Now countries place bids to the IOC and then they choose the upcoming years host. The reason hosting is so attractive is because it's an opportunity to flex your economic strength and power. The negative side of hosting is the cost. The last summer Olympics cost around 12 billion dollars, and that's on the low-end side. The Beijing summer games in 2008 cost almost fifty billion dollars. Private developers and cities love to have the games at their location. The cost to build the stadiums is an extremely high price just to be used a couple times. The money tourism brings in is also a huge bonus. Most of the time the cost out ways the benefits, and cities are left with a copious amount of debt and infrastructure damage. Just think about the plumbing and the sewer system. A half a million more people using water and using the toilet is a lot. Electricity usage will also increase dramatically.
