The Roaring Twenties

The Roaring Twenties was known as the period soon after the end of World War I. The people of this time were hoping for a new change to come ahead and bring a period of happiness, instead of the gloomy period once before. The United States was beginning to turn over from a time of war to a time of peace.

They started with their economy. Americans spent their money on improving their surroundings such as roads, tourism, and real estate. New technology began to be on rise such as cars, refrigerators, telephones, radios, ovens, etc. This made Americans began to start living in the higher standards. They bought their own houses and filled them the latest technology. Food was also cheap because of the abundance produced on farms. Radio and music were very popular. The radio covered everything that Americans relied on such as news, sports, music, and other forms of entertainment.

America during the 1920s popularized many cities and made them become the biggest attractions of the country. New York was at the top of the list with its huge skyscrapers and buildings. Chicago and New York brought about many industries which created many job opportunities. These jobs consisted of many more office jobs. These jobs involved secretaries, in which women favored these positions. However, many women still worked some factory jobs even after the war.

Women won the right the vote in 1920 and also gained much independence by beginning to work jobs instead of only men getting the credit for “bringing home the bacon.” They also developed a new style known as the “flapper” style. This consisted of skirts, dresses and short bob haircuts. The dresses were sparkly and had fringes. They also were cloche hats, especially during the day. When the women did not dress as flappers, they wore pants a lot of time. This was the first time women really began to wear pants.

Men dressed very formal and semiformal in the 1920s. Their wardrobe consisted of tuxedos and dress suits. They wore long neck ties, dress coats, vest, and loafers.
