From this quote alone it is apparent that Moore structured Bowling For Columbine in a way that would rally the people of America behind tighter gun control. It’s because of this that it becomes even more apparent that Bowling For Columbine was structured in away to provoke emotion and from that promotes the idea that many of its scenes were structured. This is the clearest indication of Moore’s influence as a filmmaker with in the documentary. However although probably the biggest ethical issues, he certainly raises debate with his lack of empathy when interviewing people. Which is hard to accept without feeling slightly contradicted by Moores own American nationality. Moore talks briefly about America’s history with war. He shows the damage that America has inflicted on countries through the years with graphic images of ‘5000 dead Chilliens’ and the three billion pound given to Osama Bin Laden and expert training and how that then led to the attack on the Twin Towers on 9/11. He also says of how on the day of the Columbine shooting the ‘President bombed another country we couldn’t pronounce’. This documentary is definitely an attack on America, there is no doubt that they are the enemy, at least for the films running time of 120 minutes. Although there are many people in America that fully support their rights to bare arms, there are also several people that do not and it is seen to be forgotten that there are people fighting for the same rights as Moore. There is a section of the film in which Moore compares America to its neighbouring country Canada. Moore makes several comparisons between the neighbouring country, America always appears to come out at the bottom. With what appears to be more crime and far more often, Moore finds it baffling that Canadians allegedly do not lock their doors at night. Bowling For Columbine is definitely a participatory documentary, often considered to be the polar opposite to observation documentary. Participatory often welcomes direct engagement between the filmmaker and subject and it is often the documentarian that accompanies the film with a voice over. There are often worries about how far the filmmaker is willing to push their subjects in order to obtain an exciting and emotive shot. There is also worry for lack of privacy for the subject and the filmmaker is often seen as intruding on their lives, this is certainly the case with Bowling For
