Filmed in 1982 and based in 16th century France, The Return of Martin Guerre is the story of a man named Arnaud, who was almost able to trick a women, her family, and a village that he was a man named Martin Guerre. Martin Guerre was a man living as a lower class citizen in France. He and his family worked on their property that they owned, to make a living and provide for themselves. He was married to a woman named Betrande and had a son with her. One afternoon after being accused of stealing by his father, Martin disappeared. Eight years later a man claiming to be Martin returned. The family and village believed this man because he looked like Martin and knew many details of Martins life. It emphasizes the importance of truth and that the truth with eventually come out. Throughout the film Martin’s imposter, Arnaud lied about who he was and for awhile was able to trick an entire village. At the end the truth came out, and Arnaud was executed for his dishonesty, emphasizing that honesty is and was a very important part of a person and a society. Another theme is the importance of family and loyalty to family. Even after Martin had disappeared and abandoned the family for nearly ten years, they still were excited about his arrival and welcomed him with open arms. While some of his family was hesitant and upset about his disappearance, they were still loyal to him. His wife, Betrande had also been loyal to him while he was missing, although he had left her to raise her son without a father. Another theme that was emphasized was about greed, and how being greedy would eventually get you nowhere in life. Arnaud wanted a wife, and a family, and land of his own. Arnaud of course did not want to do this the right way and instead let his greed get the best of him, leading him to do things that were unconstitutional and morally wrong. In the end his greediness got him nowhere and he was executed, losing the family and life that he had stolen from someone
