Revered by some, and shamed by others — skateboarding is growing tremendously fast. In fact, the amount of skateboarders in the country has increased by over 128 percent over the past decade, now forming a population of 11 million skateboarders (Aperio). While skateboarders recognize the sport as a craft, many others see it as notorious, even criminal. This is due to the very nature of the sport. Skateboarders have built a dependency on street infrastructure, like stairs and ledges, in order to perform their tricks. Many cities have found a quick but rather futile solution to the complaints made by business owners and pedestrians; make skating illegal! If you have a conversation with someone about skateboards, someone is bound to mention that, “skateboarders are just a bunch of dangerous criminal no-lifers… ” This is far from the truth, and this lie has been fabricated by the very communities who have criminalized the sport by adopting unjust laws regulating skateboarding. The municipal code in Yamhill, Oregon, for instance, proclaims some blatantly contradictory laws concerning skateboards and where they should be ridden. According to the code, skateboards can’t be ridden on certain sidewalks in the city. Therefore, skaters must ride on the streets, and, presumably so, shall, “obey all traffic control devices.” However, even when they are on the streets, they are restricted. The code also states that skateboarders on the streets must “yield the right-of-way to motor vehicles,” (Yamhill). How are skateboarders expected to train their craft if they aren’t allowed to ride on the sidewalks, and then their rights are also restricted in the only other place they can skate? Laws like these criminalize skateboarders. The first skateboards were made in the 1950’s being used as an exciting activity to take part in when the waves were down. From then and now the sport has changed tremendously, thanks to a group of young skaters from a slum area of Venice Beach or Dog-town, as the locals called it, known as the z-boys in the 1970’s. Even though skateboarding was already known and invented, the z-boys are the ones who made skating famous and took it to new heights in popularity. But how did they do this? The Z-boys made this sport what it is today, and played a very important part in the history and evolution of skateboard style and quality.

Parts of Stoner Park are designed as a skate park, which could prevent older adults from visiting due to distaste for the younger generations’ skating interests or danger of accidents with the skaters. However, the Japanese Garden is a tranquil place with beautiful Japanese foliage, which could provide an enjoyable environment for those looking to unwind and get away from the urban atmosphere that is eminent throughout Los Angeles. Stoner Park is, however, the only park in Sawtelle (“Parks Sawtelle, Los Angeles, CA,” n.d.). If residents such as older adults do not live near it, its accessibility is less convenient, and because it is the sole park, it may see a lot of traffic which could also ward off seniors. A prevalent but highly economical constraint that has plagued inner city communities is a lack of financial income. Studies have identified “costs of registration, equipment and travel expenses”, as key determents of the lack of participation within recreational activities by lower and single income families (Hughes et al, 1992). Though many programs are offered for free, programs which require fees discourage youth in lower income families from participating (Torrance, 1998). Many Inner cities do not offer recreational programs for its residents within the community, forcing the residents to seek recreational activates elsewhere. This results in additional investments in both time and transportation cost, as many low income families cannot afford a car (Hughes et al, 1992). This causes a strain on single parent families with more than one child, as they struggle to find programs which are suitable for various ages in different locations (Hughes et al, 1992). Another socioeconomic constraint which has heavily impacted recreational activities throughout inner city communities, is a lack of facilities and space for community centers. The legalization of marijuana has been a highly debated topic for many of years. Since the first president to the most recent, our nation’s leaders have consumed the plant known as weed. With such influential figures openly using this drug why is it so frowned upon? Marijuana is considered a gateway drug, a menace to society, and mentally harmful to its consumers. For some people weed brings a sense of anxiety, dizziness, or unsettling feeling. Like alcohol, tobacco or any other drug, those chemicals may not respond well with their body. For other people marijuana brings joy, a sense of relief, and takes the edge off of every day stress. For those who are associated with cannabis, purposes usually range from a relaxant, or cash crop, to more permissible uses such as medicine, and ingredient to make so many other materials. We now need to look at what would change if marijuana were legal. Benefits to the economy and agriculture, health issues, and crime rates are three areas worth looking at. Deliberating on the pros and cons of this plant we can get a better understanding for marijuana. From there it will be easier to make a clear consensus on what is best for the nation.

I believe that in middle school, it is a necessity for kids to be involved in extracurricular sports to learn knew skills that they can apply on and off the field. Due to budget cuts, more and more schools have had to cut extracurricular sports. I know that I want sports to come back and so do many kids in middle school. The parents need to take more responsibility as well and stop letting the streets raise their children. Once everyone takes accountability for their own actions and stops putting the blame on someone else, then a solution can be found and everyone can work together to enforce it. Pinpoint the problem areas little by little and work on one thing at a time. Everyone expects change to happen right away without working for it and that’s where the problem lies.
The illegal racers exposed their self to dangerous . Some of them cost their life with dangerous bike ride for example trying to escape from police road block and fight with police. Street racers are not only risking their lives, but they are also putting innocent pedestrian lives at risk. Having people race their cars in neighborhood is just not an option.
