The Pros And Cons Of Overfishing

Overfishing is a major threat to ocean ecosystems and to our food source. Overfishing is when we capture drastic amounts of fish in a smaller amount of time than fish can reproduce. For centuries we have relied on fishing as a source for food. Over the years we have developed new methods of fishing and have enhanced our equipment to capture vast amounts of fish in a minimum amount of time. We now have industrial fishing companies that provide for our seafood demand. As trawling vessels, large ships used by fishing companies, continue to capture large amounts of fish we begin to shorten supply in the future. With fishing industries advancing dramatically, fishing gear now consists of equipment such as long-lasting, large nets and hooks to …show more content…

The first 200 miles off a country’s coast access to resources is not regulated, meaning anyone with a boat can fish in these areas (Slow food 43). ¨The stability of ecological communities depends largely on the interactions between predators and prey¨ (DUJS 1). They have also destabilized food chains and harm the ecosystem. The FAO stated about twenty-five percent of the world's captured fish end up being discarded because they are unintentionally caught, are illegal market species, or lack size and weight (DUJS 1). ¨CFP rules force fishermen to dump billions of dead fish because they are too small or the wrong species¨ (Debating Europe 1). Small fish, including juveniles and species at the bottom of the food chain, are often thrown back into the sea because they are too small for commercial interest. They make up a large percentage of catches (Slow food 43). Illegal and unregulated fishing is an estimate of eleven through twenty-six million tonnes of fishing worldwide (Facts & Figures 1). If predators are commonly caught then their preys will result in overpopulation, since they no longer have the predators to regulate their population (Connect us fund 1). Since overfishing damaged food chains, predators have been forced to adapt to different environment and characteristics. Animals will have to travel to distant destinations to find food. This results in them being hunted or forced out because they are not in their natural habitat (Connect us fund
