The United States is the world leader in incarceration rates; in 2009 there were 1.6 million men and women incarcerated. Because of this, one could assume there are not many rules and regulations that take place before sentencing someone to a correctional facility. However, there critical steps and precautions that must be taken before placing someone in a correctional facility, as there are different levels or types of prisons.
If a person is arrested for a crime and is found guilty or takes a plea bargain they will be placed in temporary custody where a corrections personal will begin the task of classifying and assigning the prisoners security level. Activities and programs may take place inside and outside of the housing units. A few of the activities/programs to keep inmates occupied are; adult basic education, board and card games, computer labs, exercise classes, health education, recreational sports, and much more. Jail officials believe that by providing programs that keep inmates active it helps improve their changes of successfully entering back into society.
Indiana State Prison is known as one of the hardest prisons; it is a maximum security prison for adult males, with an average of 2,200 prisoners. MSNBC did a documentary on the inmates and their thoughts and feelings about this prison. One prisoner stated “the things you never think you’d have to do out on the streets, you do here” (Documentary HD, 2014) A prisoner’s cell is their everything; their kitchen, laundry room, bathroom and bedroom; which they they share cell
