Getting into college is hard for almost everyone, and usually hoops are having to be jumped in order to receive an acceptance letter into the four-year college of your choice. But not everyone’s so lucky, if you don’t get into the the college of choice there are other alternatives a gap year, going straight into a profession, or the last resort which is community college. Many factors make or break whether you enter into a four-year college or go straight to community college. Community college is a last resort decision, if everyone got straight A’s and the price of housing and tuition for a four-year college wasn’t so expensive then a lot more students would attend. “Citing the College Board, The New York Times observed that the average tuition at community colleges is less than half the cost of a state school ($2,272 compared to $5,836)” says Adam Sorensen quoting the times. Community college is a much cheaper incentive than going straight to a four-year college. For those whom can’t afford a four-year college although they may have the academic capability to, money may be an issue. Another reason some attend community colleges is to keep a job “college is located at a convenient spot between work and home. I can relate, for it was exactly this line of thinking that dictated where I sent my teaching résumé.” Says Professor X the author of In the Basement of the Ivory Tower. I am a good example of that, NOVA is the perfect output between my house and job. Although some jobs allow you to keep a job for when you come back in the summer some don’t. Others may have the profession that they plan on having for their final career and leaving wouldn’t be suitable. My grades were good and I had all the academic standards in order to go but my SAT score and overall GPA wasn’t high enough for Virginia Techs caliber. Because of it I decided to go to Northern Virginia Community College also known as NOVA then transfer. “Students who weren’t able to secure a spot in their dream or safety schools, or those who want to take advantage of the financial benefits of staying in state, can start at a community college and plan to transfer, experts say.” Said Briana Boyington in her article, which is a perfect example of my situation. I also realized I would get financial benefit going to a community college. While at Northern Virginia Community College I decided to get a job, for the majority of the year I worked at United Bank which was a perfect distance between my home and school. A strategy Professor X said his student’s with job did was “They work during the day and come to class in the evenings.” I did something very similar yet I had the majority of my classes in the morning then went to work in the afternoon till night time. Towards the very end of the year I decided working Monday through Saturday full time while being a full time student was too much work for me and I had to focus more on my studies. Yet I’ve realized that going to community college has actually helped me. I now know exactly where I want to be and what I want to do in my future and I
