Alain de Botton sees humorist as vital people in our society. In today's society, we see comedians saying very rude and racist remarks but get away with it because it is a “joke.” If one was to say the joke normally, a conflict would occur. The same goes for cartoon shows such as South Park and The Simpsons. The comedy TV shows convey a message without being rude about it. Yet somehow the human psyche in many individuals was able to endure throughout these imprisonments. Men and women were almost completely dehumanized during this genocide, but their psyche survived it. Humor can come in many different forms. Many people are aware of the blatant humor of slapstick, but it takes a keener mind to notice the subtle detail in sarcasm or satire. In A Modest Proposal, Jonathan Swift was able to create a piece of literature addressing the faults of the Irish culture while embedding in a humorous essay. In his 2004 book, Status Anxiety, Alain de Botton argues that the chief aim of humorists is not merely to entertain but to discuss topics that might otherwise be “dangerous or impossible to state directly.” To begin, it is important to understand what humor is and how it differs from satire. Humor is anything that makes us laugh, while satire is a genre of literature which uses humor as a tool to convey an argument (Singh, 68).
Humor is something that everyone can relate to. It's all around us, used every day, by everyone. Below, I’ve found three comedic items that tickled my funny bone. I made sure that each one actually made me laugh, therefore actually possessing humor rather than attempting to be humorous. Although they all share a similarity in being funny, each one captures a different aspect humor. Humor is not only to entertain, but “to convey with impunity messages that might be dangerous or impossible to state directly” as argued by Alain de Botton, a Swiss philosopher, writer, and television presenter. Humorists sometimes use their platform in order to send their arguments and/or messages across. Because they say things in a joking matter, they are able to touch upon a topic, which at times can be inappropriate or politically incorrect, and give their opinions and comments while they come out of the argument and the fight with minor scratches. Many subjects such as, sexual orientation and race, are just a few of the topics humorists talk about, which make them a vital function in society.
Methods and Procedures: To carry this study out, they used event history techniques in order to analyze humor attempts and successes. They did this using groups of 6 people each. They further used their results with their insights on status and emotion to develop a new theory (talked about in the Background and Purpose section above).
