In this new day mark by computer usage and rampant use of technology by everyone, software usages have increase dramatically. Most people have computers and laptops that use Windows 7 or Mac OS X. However, these software programs are expensive, usually ranging from $80 to $200. As a result, some people are illegally downloading software and other forms of media online from website like ThePirateBay.com, engaging in an activity called piracy. Merrill Dictionary states that piracy is “the unauthorized reproduction or use of a copyrighted book, recording, television program, patented invention, trademarked product, etc.” These illegally activities have increased dramatically over the last decade and are now costing the multimedia industry billions of dollars in lost revenue every year. The lost revenue is preventing the industry from making more jobs and lessening the tax revenue that can the government can acquiring. The government is the only entity that can stop piracy. But, so far, government has taken a lackluster approach to solve it. So since piracy is increasingly affecting multimedia businesses negatively, the government need to be more active in stopping it by shutting down website that allow piracy, implementing steep penalty for people found guilty of piracy, and removing Internet privilege for people found guilty of engaging in piracy multiple times. To understand the problem of piracy in the United States, here are some stats about piracy in the U.S. 20% percent of people in the U.S engages in piracy. The U.S piracy rate is 20 % resulting in a loss of 9.1 billion dollar since it is by far the world’s largest software market. Even though the reasoning behind the claim is fair, it is ill-sighted. People are illegally gaining software that is meant to be brought for free, costing the business that sells the software revenue. Also, the claim that people’s privacy rights are violated by French-style privacy laws is wrong since the right for internet access is a privilege and not a right guarantee or even mention in the Constitution. Thus, the government has the right to shut down people Internet access for engaging in illegal activities. Not only would the industry benefits in term of gaining a extra billion dollar in revenue, The United States of America would become a better nation in regard to the country gaining extra tax revenue and thousands of new jobs.
