“Characterization is an accident that flows out of action and dialogue.” This quote, by Jack Woodford, describes how characterization occurs. There are many ways to create and describe the character’s story. In “The Most Dangerous Game”, the character, General Zaroff, is developed by the use of speech, appearance, and actions. In “The Most Dangerous Game”, the author use the characters appearance to develop the character, General Zaroff. The story states, “The man was singularly handsome… He was a tall man past middle age, for his hair was a vivid white; but his thick eyebrows and pointed military moustache were as black as the night from which Rainsford had come.”(pg. 9). In the story General Zaroff states, “My life has been one prolonged hunt. I went into the army - It was expected of a nobleman's son - and for a time commanded a division of Cossack Cavalry, but my real interest was always the hunt. I have hunted every kind of game in every land. It would be impossible for me t o tell you how many animal I have killed.” (Pg.11). This reveals how General Zaroff is a good hunter and maybe a little crazy. I can infer these things from the way he says “It would be impossible for me to tell you how many animals I have killed.” In the story General Zaroff also states, “They were no match at all for a hunter with his wits about him and a high-powered rifle. I was bitterly disappointed. I was lying in my tent with a splitting headache one night when a terrible thought pushed its way into my mind. Hunting was beginning to bore me and hunting, remember, had been my life. I have heard that in america, business men often go to pieces when they give up the business that has been their life.” (Pg.12). This tells us that he is a bad person with bad thoughts.
