In the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, the author uses the pursuit of revenge to characterize, and she uses symbols to show the significance of the characters actions. The title Frankenstein is significant because that’s the creator of the monster’s name, and the old title The Modern Prometheus is significant because there are parallels between the main character and Prometheus the greek myth. The title is significant but the older title is the most significant because the author is saying that Victor Frankenstein is the modern version of the greek myth. The opening scene is important because Frankenstein and Walton are talking and this is in Walton’s point of view, they are already in the North which is desolate, but Robert loves it and describes it as a “ region of beauty”(13). The opening scene also foreshadows the climactic scene and sets up the parallels that are between Robert and Victor. In the letters, you can tell that Frankenstein does see himself in Walton and that is why he tells Robert Walton his story. The significance in the closing scene is that they are “back” in the place as the opening scene. Frankenstein talks to Robert and as Frankenstein dies his last words are “Seek happiness in tranquillity, and avoid ambition, even if it be only the apparently innocent one of distinguishing yourself and science and discoveries.” (192) Frankenstein realizes that there was destruction through knowledge and he is giving Robert the best advice he can give, and this is when you start to see Mary Shelley’s lesson she has for the people in her time period, since she did live through the industrial revolution and those were hard times I think she was basically telling people that too much knowledge is bad. Now back to the story, Frankenstein does die and the monster boards the ship soon after, and he does show remorse that his creator is dead, Robert also shows something that nobody really has in the entire story
