In the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, the author uses the pursuit of revenge to characterize, and she uses symbols to show the significance of the characters actions. The title Frankenstein is significant because that’s the creator of the monster’s name, and the old title The Modern Prometheus is significant because there are parallels between the main character and Prometheus the greek myth. The title is significant but the older title is the most significant because the author is saying that Victor Frankenstein is the modern version of the greek myth. The opening scene is important because Frankenstein and Walton are talking and this is in Walton’s point of view, they are already in the North which is desolate, but Robert loves it and describes it as a “ region of beauty”(13). The opening scene also foreshadows the climactic scene and sets up the parallels that are between Robert and Victor. In the letters, you can tell that Frankenstein does see himself in Walton and that is why he tells Robert Walton his story. The significance in the closing scene is that they are “back” in the place as the opening scene. Frankenstein talks to Robert and as Frankenstein dies his last words are “Seek happiness in tranquillity, and avoid ambition, even if it be only the apparently innocent one of distinguishing yourself and science and discoveries.” (192) Frankenstein realizes that there was destruction through knowledge and he is giving Robert the best advice he can give, and this is when you start to see Mary Shelley’s lesson she has for the people in her time period, since she did live through the industrial revolution and those were hard times I think she was basically telling people that too much knowledge is bad. Now back to the story, Frankenstein does die and the monster boards the ship soon after, and he does show remorse that his creator is dead, Robert also shows something that nobody really has in the entire story
When you hear the word “Frankenstein”, the first thing that comes to mind is a creepy, zombie-like monster; but this is not exactly what the story is all about. The monster is not actually named Frankenstein; it’s the creator of the monster whose name is Victor Frankenstein. Because of Victor’s interest in natural science and creation of life, he decided to study relentlessly and create his own human out of something inanimate. Once brought to life though, the creature ends up being more of a curse than an amazing invention. Victor then spends the rest of his life in fear and grief to try and put an end to the monster he created. Gaining inspiration from Ancient Greek Mythology, Mary Shelley published a classic gothic science fiction novel, known informally as Frankenstein. In Ancient Greek folklore, Prometheus is said to be the wisest of all the Gods. In the form of fire, he has been praised for bringing forth knowledge and enlightenment to mankind. The history of Prometheus’ fate is depicted throughout the text. Victor Frankenstein, whom upon years of study and fascination of natural philosophy and chemistry, discovers the secret of life, just as Prometheus once discovered the secret of fire (in many cultures, fire is a portrayal of energy and life), which makes a direct link to the relations of Prometheus and Victor. Armed with the knowledge he has long been seeking, Victor secludes himself in an apartment and begins to fashion a creature out of old body parts....
The modernisation of the Prometheus myth does not completely validate Frankenstein’s actions, however, even if we see overreaching as an acceptable form of heroism. Certainly, the moment of endowing ‘the spark of life’ (52) in the monster can be seen as akin to the deliverance of Promethean fire – updated as electricity – but the preparation of the physiology of the creature undermines this. Although he forms the monster out of ‘lifeless clay’ (81), in reference to Prometheus sculpting man from clay in versions of the myth, Frankenstein’s work is notably ‘filthy’ (81) and involves a great deal of ‘painful labour’ (79) which physically sickens him. Mary Shelley's book, Frankenstein, deals with the major dilemma of the creation of man. Rousseau deals with the topic of abandonment in Emile, which stemmed the thoughts of creation for Shelley in 1816 upon reading Rousseau's opinions. Rousseau blames the problems that children inhibit solely upon the parents shoulders (Mellor). Mary Shelley is able to relate to this statement on a personal level due to the parenting (or lack of) within her life. This in turn leads to a broader question concerning Shelley's Frankenstein; is the monster really the sole person to blame for his murderous actions? According to Rousseau's theory, the monster is not the sole problem. Victor Frankenstein is his creator or "father" figure thus giving him the responsibility of his monster.

First, Victor, being the scientist, should have known how to do research on the subject a lot more than he had done. For this I deprived myself of rest and health. I had desired it with an ardour that far exceeded moderation; but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart. (156) & nbsp; Victor is saying that he has isolated himself for two years and in the end, he is not at all happy because of the bad outcome. He also adds, "Winter, spring and summer passed.so deeply was I engrossed in my occupation" (156). By spending most of his time inside on his experiment, never going out, but mostly worrying about his success, he has got himself crazier. This has made him lose sight of his surroundings and judgment & nbsp; Moreover, the monster should not be held responsible for killing Victor's family members and friends as shown in the book and movie, because it is Victor who has brought a dead creature back to life. He expects the monster to know everything when he wakes up cool, calm, and collected. But when the monster is awakened, he does not know anything. He sees a world different from what he is used to, which makes him get nervous and scared, so he&nb has removed him from dead. With the dawning of life, the monster has to learn about his new environment. In the play of Frankenstein, the monster starts to gradually get used to things. The problems he encounters are with Victor's assistant, Peter Krempe, Victor's friend, Henry, and other family members, including Elizabeth, and these are reactions to how these people treat him. These reactions are clearly shown in the movie of Young Frankenstein, where Victor tries to teach the monster how to live like to show off the monster to an audience in a dance routine of sorts. But then people start to scream, panic and throw things at the monster, so he reacts by attacking them to defend himself. In this case, it is clear that Victor tries to push the monster too hard because he wants to be famous.
There are many authors that use a well-known historical figure to contrast the protagonist of their novel. One great author that uses this method of comparing a renowned person to a fictional character is Mary Wollstonecraft Shelly. In her novel Frankenstein, she uses the subtitle “The Modern Prometheus.” Prometheus, the Greek god, and Victor Frankenstein, the creator of the Monster, have contrasting qualities and behaviors that allow them to go against God’s will and attempt to create life. Prometheus, a Greek god, is the son of Iapetus and Themis.

Morally speaking, the ancient myths of Prometheus greatly discourage rebellion. Frankenstein also displays this theme, as Victor rebels against his own advice that, “A human being in perfection ought always to preserve a calm and peaceful mind and never to allow passion or a transitory desire to disturb his tranquility” (Shelley, 37). Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein as a modern day version of the legend of Prometheus. Prometheus created men out of clay and taught them the "arts of civilisation" (Webster's World Encyclopedia CD-ROM 1999). Zeus, the chief god of the Titans, wanted to destroy Prometheus' creation but Prometheus stole fire from heaven to help mankind. Zeus punished Prometheus by chaining him to a rock where an eagle would feed on his liver during the day and each night the liver would grow back. Prometheus was able to bargain for his release because he knew a secret which concerned Zeus' future. Heracles shot the eagle and so Prometheus gained release. Victor Frankenstein is Shelley's modern Prometheus in that he, too, created man. The themes that relate to the myth of Prometheus in the novel are Frankenstein's torment, the monster's education, and the absolute determination of the individual spirit and how this determination can rival that of God. Shelley uses these themes to show that the human spirit is capable of many things - of noble pursuits that rival God himself, but also of the darkest of actions that draw comparisons with the acts of Satan.

In Frankenstein, Mary Shelley uses the motif of monstrosity to convey the theme that a person’s outward appearance is not what makes them a monster but rather their actions or inactions that classify true monstrosity. Despite the fact that the monster Victor Frankenstein creates is a literal example of monstrosity in the novel there are many parts that give meaning to monstrosity within character’s actions. Although Victor appears normal, since he is human his ambitions, secrets, selfishness, and inaction makes him a monster himself. Along with monstrous characters the pursuit of knowledge that is seen in Victor, his monster, and Walton in Frankenstein prove that knowledge can be a monstrosity. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is created using the life stories of different characters in the novel. The novel itself could be seen as a monster created similarly to Victor’s monster.
Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s Frankenstein (sometimes also known as The Modern Prometheus) is the classic gothic novel of her time. In this eerie tale, Dr. Victor Frankenstein – suffering from quite an extreme superiority complex – brings to life a creature made from body parts of deceased individuals from nearby cemeteries. Rather than to embrace the Creature as his own, Frankenstein alienates him because of his unpleasant appearance. Throughout the novel, the Creature is ostracized not only by Frankenstein but by society as a whole. Initially a kind and gentle being, the Creature becomes violent and eventually seeks revenge for his creator’s betrayal. Rather than to merely focus on the exclusion of the Creature from society, Shelley depicts the progression of Dr. Frankenstein’s seclusion from other humans as well, until he and the Creature ultimately become equals – alone in the world with no one to love, and no one to love them back. Frankenstein serves as more than simply a legendary tale of horror, but also as a representation of how isolation and prejudice can result in the demise of the individual.
