Commentary: The portions of this passage that I'd like to focus on are when the grandmother calls the Misfit one of her own children, and when the Misfit is talking about if he was there with Jesus. Beginning with the latter, I believe that this mostly one sided conversation that the Misfit has with the grandmother discussing Jesus and what he would have known if had been there is supposed to act as a parallel with Bailey, and possibly the grandkids, and not being at the house to see the secret panel with the silver hidden behind it. It is quite understandable that this is a stretch and more likely that this is meant to mean something else in O'Connor's eyes, but my explanation still makes a little bit of sense.
I chose this word because the tone of the first chapter seems rather dark. We hear stories of the hopes with which the Puritans arrived in the new world; however, these hopes quickly turned dark because the Purtains found that the first buildings they needed to create were a prison, which alludes to the sins they committed; and a cemetery, which contradicts the new life they hoped to create for themselves.
After the family got into the car and were on their way, the grandmother remembered an old house that she had went to when she was a young lady and, being selfish once again, she took it upon herself to try and convince Bailey to stop at the house. She remembered many things about the house but “knew Bailey would not be willing to lose any time looking at an old house” (189) so she sweetened the story of the house up by stating that it had “a secret panel in this house” (190). That little white lie that she happened to throw into the mix sparked the kids up like a wildfire on a hot summer day. The children started kicking and chanting that they want to go see the house that grandmother had been talking about. They wanted to see the secret panel and they wouldn’t stop until they saw it. Little did the kids know, but their own selfish grandmother who lied about the secret panel and just wanted to go there to see if her memory served her right and had just manipulated them. She made them do her bidding for her and just when she thought that they were so close to the house “a horrible thought came to her. The thought was so embarrassing that she turned red in the face and her eyes dilated…The horrible thought she had…was that the house she had remembered so vividly was not in Georgia but in Tennessee” (191). To buttress this she pointed out that even at the grandmothers death misfit confirmed her to be a good woman in his statement “she would have been a good woman if she was to face death every minute of her life” (437). In contrast to her opinion Stephen Bandy a notable literally critics in one of his articles “One of my babies “: The Misfit and the Grandmother” he compared the characters of both and argued that despite the fact that O`Conner claimed the grandmother was merely filled with “prejudice” of her time, He described the grandmother as racist, busy body and utterly self-absorbed. When she saw that her child and grandchildren was been killed tried to manipulate Misfit to spare her own life whereas she was the one that lead them to their death.
He’s the most dangerous criminal, and the Grandmother knows that. It seems she wants to buy herself time by having a conversation with The Misfit. The Misfit seems to be having a nice conversation because he was talking about his life and the meaning behind his name. He explains in their conversation why he calls himself “The Misfit”, according to the story, “I can’t make what all I done wrong fit what all I gone through in punishment.”. So, he named himself The Misfit, because of the wrong things he had done in the past. He talked about how his dad had something to do with him being what he is. “My daddy said I was a different breed of dog from my brothers and sisters.” It seems that his father knew he was different in a bad way and he expresses it with his son The Misfit. For him, murdering people is only to give them a punishment they deserved, but killing the Grandmother is justified as the ultimate punishment for her sins of manipulation and deviousness. According to the Article from Bethea, “like Satan, The Misfit is an anti-Christ. Jesus loved children, whereas children make the anti-Christ Misfit ‘nervous’’. The Misfit has already directed the execution of the Grandmother's entire family, and it must be obvious to all, including reader and Grandmother, that she is the next to die. But she struggles on. There are three phases of thought for the Grandmother. During the first phase, which is in the beginning, she is completely focused on herself in relation to how others think of her. The Second Phase occurs when she is speaking to The Misfit. In the story, The Misfit represents a quasi-final judgment. He does this by acting like a mirror. He lets whatever The Grandmother says bounce right off him. He never really agrees with her or disagrees, and in the end he is the one who kills her. His second to last line, "She would of been a good woman," The Misfit said, "if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life," (O'Conner 152). might be the way O'Conner felt about most of us alive, or how she felt that God must feel about us.
With these two divergent personas that define the grandmother, I believe the ultimate success of this story relies greatly upon specific devices that O’Connor incorporates throughout the story; both irony and foreshadowing ultimately lead to a tale that results in an ironic twist of fate and also play heavily on the character development of the grandmother. The first sense of foreshadowing occurs when the grandmother states “[y]es and what would you do if this fellow, The Misfit, Caught you” (1042). Regardless of the grandmother’s attempt to reason with him by praying, he has a profound concept of Jesus. He tells the grandmother about his anger and lack of faith towards Jesus. As the Misfit compares himself to Jesus, the Misfit seems upset because they have “papers” on him and not on Jesus (O 'Connor 151). Even though the Misfit is a cold blooded murderer, he is interpreted as a wise man who is almost superior to the others. The Misfit is taking on the role of God when he chooses to make his call and kill the family. Not only does he make a decision for the family to die, but he also judges the grandmother: “She would of been a good woman, if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life" (O’Connor 153). Since the beginning of the story, the readers have come to known the grandmother as a spiteful old lady due to her repulsive and deceitful attitudes toward others. Right from the start, we can see the grandmother using her manipulative tactics on her family. “The grandmother didn't want to go to Florida. She wanted to visit some of her connections in east Tennessee and she was seizing at every chance to change Bailey's mind.” (O’Connor 1) This initial quote shows an early indication that the grandmother is determined to obtain whatever she wants and will not allow anything to get in her way, even if it means manipulating her own family. Not long after being on the dirt road the grandmother recalls a “…horrible thought…” that sent shock waves through her feet scaring “… Pity Sing the cat [, and causing it to] spr[ing] onto Baileys shoulder”(O’connor.428). Bailey not long after loses control of the car and crashes them into a ditch flipping the car a couple times. The author noting that “The horrible thought she had had before the accident was that the house she had remembered so vividly was not in Georgia but in Tennessee”(O’connor.428). The authors insight on the grandmother allows the reader to fully understand the grandmothers selfishness and inability to admit she was ever wrong in anything she did. It is not long after the foreshadowing catches up to the helpless family stranded in the midst of nowhere as a strange car slowly approaches them with three men in it. The grandmothers outspokenness is once again continued as she made it vocally known that she recognizes the misfit as one of the men. It is at that moment the misfit says “…it would have been better for all of you, lady, if you hadn 't of reckernized me”(O’connor.429). The reader can conclude the fate of the family at this point and lay blame everything that has happened on the grandmother. Soon after killing the rest of her family the grandmothers social order begins to vividly and rapidly change as she tells the misfit to “pray” and even tells him “…you’re one of my babies. You 're one of my own children”(O’connor.432-433). The reader can now see the grandmothers transformation as she lives the last couple minutes of her life she talks about Jesus, and even considering the misfit to be a “…good man at heart”(O’connor.430). The grandmother is very interesting woman. She believes that her conscience guides her through life. With this mentality, this makes her believe that she is so much better than everyone else. She also judges the lack of goodness in people she knows and doesn’t know at any opportunity she can get. She has this moral code that almost falls apart every time it gets challenged. This is completely different when it comes to criminal called the Misfit. He has a moral code that is not always right but no matter what happens, he sticks to it. He questions everything life has to offer but because of this, he takes everything he learns and appreciates everything it has to offer.
Never once as the Grandmother was begging for her life, did she stop and beg for the life of her family. Her tactic to save herself went from “You wouldn’t shoot a lady would you?” (O’Connor), to “You’ve got good blood! I know you come from nice people” (O’Connor), then lastly to “If you would pray, Jesus would help you” (O’Connor). Yet to every beg the Grandmother made, the Misfit was completely honest with her, admitting that he would hate to have to kill a lady, but he would do it, admitting that he did come from good people but that he is not good, and admitting that he does not want Jesus’ help, that he is perfectly fine alone. Because the Misfit was so honest and open about who he was and his flaws, the Grandmother realized that she is not a “Good Man”. That she has been lying to herself and the people around her. The Misfit allowed the Grandmother to come to terms with who she really is a person. The Misfit giving her this eye opening realization before taking her life gave her the redemption she needed so
Flannery O 'Connor utilizes multiple biblical references, such as Jesus raising the dead, to create a foundation for what the Grandmother and Misfit believe in terms of morality. The Grandmother references Christianity in a positive and redeeming sense while the Misfit claims that “Jesus was the only One that ever raised the dead, and He shouldn 't have done it. He shown everything off balance” (O’Connor 151). Her reality before the incident was the people such as the Misfit were evil, while those similar to her who grew up in the classic traditions of the south were better off.
