Soon, people had feared the appearance of the minister, disinvited him from joyous occasions, and believed he committed great sins for him to be hiding under a veil. Reverend Hooper felt isolated from society, and his fiancée Elizabeth felt the need to confront him. It was unraveled in the confrontation that he wears the veil not to cover his sin but to remind him of the sin that is in everyone.
