Eating disorders affect a variety of individuals. This is due, in part, to what we believe beauty is. Mass media has an influence on these eating disorders. Girls believe that they should look like the super models that they see on television or in fashion magazines. This encourages them to take dangerous measures that will make them lose weight in unhealthy ways. This is a huge problem in our society and it needs to be addressed. According to Naomi Wolf, “ In her book The beauty myth” beauty today is not, about makeup. It’s the disempowering, backlash of propaganda that suggests that feminism makes women ugly, or forces women to choose between beauty and liberation.” (Wolf 2) According to Marton Reka, “In Western societies thinness symbolizes sexual seductivity, strength, and fatness symbolizes laziness and loss of willpower.” (Reka 2) Most women are unhappy with their weight at some point in their lives. According to Thompson and Heinberg, “Photographic techniques such as airbrushing, soft-focus cameras, composite figures, editing, and filters may blur the realistic nature of media images even further, leading consumers to believe that the models the viewers see through the illusions these techniques create are realistic representations of actual people.” (Thompson, Heinberg 2) In the average home, the television is on more than seven hours in a day. The majority of female characters are thinner than the average woman. Out of 3,452 women, 23 percent said that movie or television celebrities influenced their body image as a child. Children who watch more television than others have a higher rate of body dissatisfaction.
