Culture is the whole way of living for a group of individuals. It includes the cultures gestures, languages, style, music, and beauty standards. Culture being the basic beliefs and assumptions it defers all around the world. The dominant culture is the most solid group among the rest when it comes to social norms, values, and practices. Sub-cultures are the non-dominant groups in which are a culture within a culture. Counter-counters are another sub group but are the complete opposite due to the norms and values. Cultures being featured in magazines are very popular in the world today. The magazines cover the style, languages, music, food, and beauty styles of each culture. From Twiggy to Kate Moss, the fashion industry has been attached to idealizing extreme slenderness, encouraging real women to hate their bodies and at extreme, develop anorexia or bulimia. If these models are exemplars of ideal beauty, then the measure for women is that to be beautiful, starvation level is required. It appears that the media and the fashion industry would have the public believe that ultra thinness symbolizes beauty when in reality, the standard represents infertility, and premature death. The public has to realize that Twiggy is different.

Legends are traditional tales handed down from earlier times and believed to have a historical basis. Myths are ancient stories dealing with supernatural beings, ancestors, or heroes. There are many different types of cultures and ways people would react in different situations. When a person thinks of the word culture they start to think of races, places, and states. Culture is in fact a lot more than that, culture is a society’s set of unique patterns, behaviors and beliefs (M.A., Lucas, Social Psychology Sociological Perspectives 3rd edition). Culture can be identified in various ways for example, the way you feel about certain situations or how would one person react differently from the way they grew up environmentally or religiously. The way a person was raised environmentally, physically, and spiritually all have an effect on other cultures. The way a person would normally act would no longer act that way due to the actions of the past. Different cultures affect other cultures in almost any way possible.
Culture is what makes an individual distinct from others. It is believed that culture is a powerful force that affects and shapes the way we perceive the world and on how we interact with other people. It is synonymous to a country or nation which sets and bears its own desired qualities or attributes. For instance, a group of people conversing in language other than English notices a woman passing by wearing veil over her face and a ruby on her nose would likely be described as one from different culture and which can likewise be alluded as one from somewhere else.

They also argue that more material is being saved when models are thinner and clothes look more elegant and drapes effortlessly on skinnier models. Most models and designers argue that models are not supposed to eat and they are meant to be skinny to sell more clothes or make them look more appealing.
Skinny was not the most beautiful thing to people, and it was not as big of an issue as it is now. So where did the ideals change from curvy being beautiful to skin-and-bones skinny being beautiful? In the 1960 's, popular figures like Twiggy promoted being skinny as beautiful, around the same time the Barbie doll became popular with young girls (Bahadur). Sure, many people are actually born skinny. But some are born big-boned and cannot help that they are that way - and they should not have to worry about it. However, we as a society have changed these ideals because we are constantly exposed to the media 's rendition of what being beautiful should mean and accepting it. The fact that being bigger used to mean that someone was wealthy just goes to show that our culture has completely thrown this principle away. But, however appalling the issue may be, there are solutions to this terrible problem that is still on the rise and hope that it will get better. Instead of letting these vulnerable people look at magazine covers and wish they were in different skin, our duty as a society is to promote the embracement of beauty and self-confidence in everyone. Motivational speakers, many of which have had their own share of self-esteem issues in the past, need to be brought to the surface and get their messages out in the open even more than they already are. Throughout history when we think about women in society we think of small and thin. Today's current portrayal of women stereotypes the feminine sex as being everything that most women are not. Because of this depiction, the mentality of women today is to be thin and to look a certain way. There are many challenges with women wanting to be a certain size. They go through physical and mental problems to try and overcome what they are not happy with. In the world, there are people who tell us what size we should be and if we are not that size we are not even worth anything. Because of the way women have been stereotyped in the media, there has been some controversial issues raised regarding the way the world views women. These issues are important because they affect the way we see ourselvescontributing in a negative way to how positive or negative our self image is.
There are many determinants for this conviction in society. However, the major cause for this conviction is the media. Rarely does society see a female celebrity that is not skinny. If a female has any fat on her bones, she is not attractive and cannot be considered beautiful. All of the top most beautiful women in the media are extremely skinny. Not once will the public see an overweight woman on a top most beautiful women list. Actresses often accredit not getting a role in a film to not being skinny enough. They will then take drastic measures to lose weight. To make matters worse, all too often that actress is already too skinny and yet she still strives to lose more weight. Women are striving for an unattainable body figure that is portrayed by the media as being the ideal standard for today's women. This even shows up in the magazines women read. We live in a world filled with media. We see or use media on a daily basis. Such media would contain television, radio, news, and commercial advertising, etc. People are bombarded by media all the time and it tends to be an influence on individuals. One of the most talked about influences, is media effecting body image. Media normally shows very thin women and attractive women. According to White, Brown, and Ginsburg (1999), the media tends to use unrealistically thin women. Larger women tend to be left out of commercials, or do not appear as pretty as thin women. When women are watching T.V. for instance and see thin women, they think that they should be thin to fit in. They feel as if they are not good enough and they may feel that they are bigger than they appear. This can tear down a woman’s confidence and self-esteem. It can also to lead to health problems such as eating disorders, working out excessively, and even using supplements to help with weight lost.
